Im trying to improve the performance of the 2.8 diesel (without changing motors). The Unichip computer has been mentioned as well as increasing the boost of the turbo (with exhaust mods). Does anyone have any experience with this motor and the above mods? Have you been able to successfully get more power without killing the motor?

Johnad, take the car to a reputable fuel injection specialist have the pump timing checked & injection break pressures checked ,if he really knows what he's doing theres are diode on the side of the pump with a No on it from 1 to 10 most cases a 4 is fitted, have this changed mine has a 6 fitted which helped the ECU mapping out with the low end peformance problem the GU has.Unichips are great too? Cheers Steve

Motsons in Qld is the place to call. They advertise in all 4b mags.

Had BIG problems with the injector pump on my 2.8GU....eventually got so bad that the vehicle refused to start when hot (wonder if yours is becoming difficult to start when hot?)....$1700.00 later the pump has been rebuilt and the vehicle is a pleasure to drive again...performance level does drop off gradually as a result of the injector pump begining to wear out...good luck with it...it drove me BATTY!

Problem with the fuel pump is a metal gasket at the head of the pump, the end where all the pressure business goes on. When hot the gasket wouldn't hold pressure thus not holding starting pressure & also the fuel is hot & thinner, thus turning a simple thing like starting into a real pain in a ass. Some 2.8s had this prob others didn't, just crap gaskets I suppose had mine done under warranty. If peformance is dropping off change the filter,CAV adaptors are the go, filters are $10 up here in the Bush, keep an eye on the air filter as they run a air flow sensor a new one can make a difference. I doubt if your pump is wearing out?

Thankyou for the info.Mine is just out of warranty. The only major problem I have had, so far, is with the oil pump gasket, which was changed under warranty. There was much debate with Nissan though, just to get it fixed. The performance, and starting, of my vehicle is ok, im just after an improvement when towing the van. I think I will take all of the advice mentioned, especially calling Motson's for advice.

I recently had a major service on the car, were all filters and all oils were changed. The car ran great after this..

I also now only use quality diesel, like Shell or Mobil. She who must be obeyed works for an oil company. They re-grade ships surplus diesel into automotive diesel..mainly sold at smaller outlets, and the supermarket type servo's (if you know what I mean). The new low grade sulpher diesel from Shell works well, with some slight improvement noted, especially when towing).

Thanks for your great input and safe travels.

John
