I currently own a 4.2 Turbo diesel Nissan Patrol and am considering the Motson 3inch exhaust upgrade. Can anyone advise on fuel savings and power/torque increases and additional noise from the free flowing exhaust? Is the exhaust value for money?

Why not go down to the local fast fit muffler place and ask for a price on a 3inch mandral bend exhaust. Chances are it will be cheaper.

diference in power, well depends who you talk to and what day of the week it is.. Everyone has an opinion, like bums really.

I think the 3inch is a worth while investment on a 4.2 TD.. I have 2.5inch mandral bend on my GQ TD42, and love it. Was recommended by local place to go 2.5 instead of 3inch, so I did...

Others say its not and is waste of $$..

Truckter,

Thanks for the reply. What was the cost of your exhaust? Motsons are asking around $1200 which includes upgrading/tuning the fuel pump and give a claimed 30% in power and torque. Do you feel the exhaust that you have gives these figures? Is yours any noiser over standard?

30% more power and torque for an exhaust change, I don't think so, unless they are going to do some serious work on both the turbo and pump as well. I wish you luck but I am extremely doubtful this could be so.

$1200???????

LOL, mine was $500....

As Rob says, you wont get 30% more from an exhaust change, not in this Eon...

Make a few phone calls to local exhaust places, few $0.50 phone calls could save you $100's!

Goona,
I have a 4.2TD with a mandrel bent system on it. The pipe is 3 inch off the turbo and reduces to 2.5 inch under the passengers seat at the normal connection point. One muffler and cost about $250 tops for the system from the 3 inch bit to the back door. I've never had the car on a dyno I just know it's better, I'm now going up hills in fifth instead of third with the camper trailer on. Noise wasn't and hasn't been an issue since fitting the pipe, purrs like a pussy cat, ho hummm Keep the shiny side up

Goona, the first modification that I did on my GU 4.2T was the exhaust. I ran a 2.5 madrel with straight through turbo type muffler. Exhaust noise is not an issue as the turbo masks the exhaust noise. As the flange diameter at the turbine is 2.5 inchs, it is questionable whether upping the pipe diameter to 3 inch has any merit over the 2.5 seeing as the body restriction of the cast turbine is 2.5. Follow? Most exhaust shops that know their stuff with do a 2.5 full system for about $320 add about another $90 for mandrel bends. Now to the no bull bleep section. With no other mods to anything else, simply changing the factory exhaust will give you 10 to 15% more power and torque. Fact. I have the figures to proove it. Some turbo fitters offer the choice of a larger turbine outlet that swaps for the factory one and this will allow you to run with 3 inch right from the turbo. Not sure of costs. Debatable how much improvement this would be over and above the 2.5.

Thank you all for the information provided. It has been a tremendous help and has saved the hip pocket. I have after everyones advise spoken to several other exhaust manufacturers and have booked into Jack Bedhams of Redcliffe. He advised he has done near on 20, 3 inch exhausts and all customers have been exstatic with the results. He also removes the restrictave 2 1/8 housing behind the Turbo and replces this with a 3 inch housing which he advises frees it up even more. Total cost is $680 or $480 without the housing. Noise difference is negligable. I will probally still go to Motsons for the fuel pump tune as well just to get that litle bit more. Thanks again to all that replied. I will keep you posted once complete.

most people are missing the obvious motson gave you a price on a complete upgrade rather than just an exhaust system.
They included in their price a tune which norm is around $800 for a diesel nissan, so there price is not to bad at all.
The fact that they suggested a tune means that these guys prob know there S@#t.
A good tune will get you around 20% exhaust 10%.
just by sticking a larger exhaust on will wont gain much bang for buck.
