Morning All,
Jackaroo 2001 3.5lt Manual - I was doing a normal service, oil and grease, on my Jackaroo the other day and when greasing the nipples on the front drive shaft I was able to turn the shaft by hand. I don't recall being able to do this before. The vehicle has auto locking hubs and the transfer case was not engaged (stubby level in N).
Is this normal? Does this shaft normally turn when driving on the road and not in 4wd? I do have some funny noises coming from in and around the g/box and t/case when under light load e.g. slight up
hill in 4th as 50 to 60kph.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Auto hubs - is this a Monterey ? The drive shaft should be free when the vehicle is not selected to 4WD mode - I lube
mine too, and can swing it around to show the grease points. Being free faves fuel, plus wear and tear - doesn't say a lot for permanent 4WD sustems :-o).... which I'm about to get into with the next chariot. My 99 SE TD Jack has manual hubs but I assume in your case, when you engage 4WD inside, the transfer case engages and the hubs lock in all at the same time.

Matt. Yes this is normal. Ur jackaroo has the old Part-time 4wd (unless monterey) and the front shafts are only engaged to the transfer case when the stubby lever is in 4H or 4L....in 2wd the shafts should spin the diff over no problems. The fact you have auto hubs just means you cant by mistake leave the hubs engaged...then, depending if one or both hubs were still engaged, be able to spin with resistance or not at all.
Answer you Q, no the shaft will not spin in 2WD on the road. Watch out for the Jackaroo for 5th gear noises they do have a noisy 5th but the Holden fix was just more insulation around the tran tunnel.
I beleive you still have the better trans...later model was a type of shift-on-the-fly and used a vaccuum servo to engage the front propshaft and can have faults (engaging without ur notice)causing you to run on the bitumen in 4WD....damaging the trans due to axle wind-up.
