Triton Suspension Upgrade

Hi all
I'm pretty new to the 4wd world but I am becoming more & more enthusiastic as time goes by. Please excuse my ignorance with the questions. We own a 2005 MK 2.8L TD Triton. We bought it new & it's standard other than a canopy, alloy bull bar, snorkel & roof racks (internal). When we go away for a trip we generally have a full load as we don't have a trailer. My wife drives the car during the week as I have a company car. My question is this: Can I upgrade height (2 - 3 inches) & suspension to accommodate 4, 5 or 600kgs without sacrificing comfort? Can anyone give me ideas on what I would require to do this if possible. My wife is pretty lenient on me so I figure if I keep her weekly drive comfortable, I'll be able to get more done to the car before she seals the purse strings...my motto is "happy wife - happy life". Any other advice would be greatly appreciated also.

Have a look at both OME as well as Ironman syspension systems. I wouldn't go more than 2 inches in height as it will create handling issues.

You need to remember that the carrying capacity of your vehicle is set by the manufacturer. Any change to that would probably need to be certified by an approved Engineer. Changing the height of your suspension will not increase you carrying capacity only serve to make your vehicle more unstable under certain conditions, place extra strain on drive and braking components and the attention of RTA and or Police.

Where does it say in the original post that he wants to increase the GVM.
He just wants a suspension upgrade, more than likely with a medium rated rear leaf springs. To carry an expected load of up to 600kg (which is well under the load capacity of the MK Triton). A medium rated leaf spring will allow him to have good unloaded driving characteristics as well as the ability to not have the arse end drag on the ground when loaded when compared with the original suspension system.

If you are going to comment please answer the question and not confuse the issue with your left field crap that has nothing to do with a basic suspension upgrade.

I have the same Model and Year. I have not done any upgrades yet but will be useing Bilsteins @ $398 a pair and new rear springs @ $600 from Auto Ride. The front bars are already wound up 50mm for the 265x75x16 (32in) Coopers ATR's. Speak to the Billy people in your State WA 93441995. I am looking for a better ride unloaded and loaded.

I reckon the only thing to do if you want better 4x4 capabilities(my Triton Goes pretty well every where with some right boot and a lot of noise). Would be Lockers front and back and some grippier tyres. This would allow slower more controlled 4x4ing

Hi Stefandsal,
I used to own a courier with the same front torsion bar,rear leaf spring set up as the triton and ended up spending $2K on a full Old Man Emu kit.
The unloaded ride was noticeably better and front(too soft ex factory) was made stiffer(to accommodate winch,second battery,bull bar)and did improve handling as well as loaded ride height and travel(rear), BUT. . . . $2000 Better. . . . . .um . . . . .
avoid the temptation of winding up torsion bars to max height cos you may end up with CV issues,about an inch above normal is as far as I would go, the Rear is not a problem.

Still haven't made up my mind totally, gonna check out XJS also as they offer a great warranty. The Ironman gear is looking good though, customer service from the dealer was excellent & has gotta be worth something!! .

Hi Stefandsal

I have a '98 MK diesel Triton. Bear in mind that the height of the chassis relative to the springs won't effect the height of the diffs relative to the ground i.e. the ground clearance. I wound up the torsion bars to bring the front end back to the specifiied height ex-factory. Even when we go away fully loaded neither the front nor rear 'sag' to any extent.
