How do you read a battery test print out??
We had the X Trail serviced today and they did a battery test and they reckoned it needed a new battery.
This is the print out
So should I get a new battery??
Cheers Kev

Hey Kev,is that 300cca the batterys capacity?i had my old 2 oem cruiser batteries sitting in the garage for 4 years, one day decided to chk volts,12.72 volts after all this time!!!ahhhh stick them on the 4 stage charger anyway,it didnt want to know about them.checked it with my mates electronic battery checka and they passed with flying colors?go figure.if it sounds like it is not cranking properly when stone cold change it,if it sounds alright leave it.flooded cell batteries are odd creatures at times.but also if its the SWMBOs change it anyway as its not a huge oulay for peace of mind.cheers Paul

Just a note before you go spending money on battery.. (and just incase they didnt test it at service)... High resistance in the starter lead will give the impression of a dead battery (I know from experiance)...
Also what your looking for in that test report is the volt drop under load... a good battery should hold around 12v if fully charged and load tested... Anything under about 11 is badish.. anything under 10 is most likly new battery.. there are pulse generators (megapulse) that de-sulphate batteries and bring them back to life but not convinced they totally work yet.. but ive heard good stories

Kev, have a look here
Site Link
According to their fact sheet "why do batteries fail?" it says that if a battery shows 9.5 volts or less on a load test it should be replaced.
That looks like a cash register docket. Did you get a fuel discount voucher with it? lol

Kev,
I would think that the S.Loaded Volts 9.46 is where the battery is failing.
Under load, starting the vehicle, the volts drop and the vehicle is hard to start.
If you were in Victoria in the winter months that could be a problem. Now that it is summer and you are going north it should not be necessary to change the battery straight away. It will have to be changed, but topping up the
water level will give it a few more months. How old is the battery?
When you do replace the battery go for the biggest that will fit in the battery tray and 300CCA is a bit low.
Being a Nissan X Trail a good battery might be over capitalizing on the value of the vehicle. :-))
A rough test that you can do at home is to turn the high beam on and try and start the vehicle. If it will not crank or is slow replace the battery.
BTW, Last year when I was in
Broome, I had battery problems. I had brought the battery from a Australian wide company.
Went to see the
Broome agent for a load test on the battery and I was advised that the battery would only last a few weeks if not less and because I was heading down
the Tanami track I should replace it now.
I said OK, the battery is still under warranty and I have the receipt.
No good.
Because the battery had not failed they could not give me warranty but were willing to sell me a new one.
I did get a new battery but not from them.

Morning Wayne,
A good battery might be overcapitalising on the value of the X Trail, but everyone has their faults LOL
It starts 1st time which is why I asked the Question.
Cheers Kev

I would be more worried about your alternator.
It clearly shows that the charge voltage is only 13.2v. Everyone knows that for a battery to be charged correctly it must be showing 13.8v or more.
This could be the reason why the battery is so low.

I reckon you have nailed this one Feral.
If the alternator output voltage is not between 13.8/14.1 volts then the battery is always only going to have around 50% charge.
Wonder did they test with hydrometer (not possible if no maintenance sealed type)

If its starting normally, I leave it alone.
Your X-trail is only 3 years old - those Panasonic batteries they come with have lasted 6 years in other Nissan vehicles I've owned.
X-
trails come with a 55D23L battery which is the best part of 600CCA.

Phil,
I think they were after extras with the service, I knocked back a replacement battery, injector service, rear brakes (can get it cheaper at Brake and Tyre place with Bendix).
I wonder where they got the 300 CCA from on the test.
Cheers Kev

If it starts the car, then there's no problem.

That's my point it has not been an issue, so what was their motive to say we needed a new one.

OK,
I just dug the Multimeter out and did a check myself.
The resting voltage is 12.75v
Alternator output is 14.03v
