Morning all
I have some unused new engine oil that has been sitting in the shed for several years. Does anyone have any knowledge on how unused oil deterioates over time. I spoke to a Mobil oil rep who said that some settling of contents may occur but give it a good shake before use and it will be ok. Just wondering if anybody works in the oil industry and has any further comments on this answer. I think the oil is about 5-6 years old.
Many thanks
Jon

For what its worth I wouldn't take the chance in anything you were relying on. Use it in the mower or something like that not the car

Mowing the lawn is second only to fishing as my favorite activity.
Nobody ever interupts when you're mowing the lawn, put a set of ear muffs on and the wife & kids can't get through.
And fishing .. it's the only activity I know of that demands you have to sit still and do bugger all for hours at a time.

Put some earphones from the music player of your choice and listen to your favourite music whilst mowing then you can really enjoy the experience!

Mine goes in the chain saw , some on motorbike chains and for lubricating hinges etc. as well as the mower oil changes . If its only a few litres and you obviously have some concerns (and havent accepted the Mobil reps answer) - why risk it
I like to feel good about the oil going into my escape machine.
Cheers

Mix it 50/50 with kerosene and use it as a fire starter, although used engine oil is actually better for fires - don't know why?

Naughty Naughty, take it to your local servo or council depot and they will despose of it for you! That the fact you mentioned this on a fourm that say's to "Tread Lightly", naughty naughty.

same with the fuel for fire!

Best way i have found to light a fire is to cut some kindling and lay it over two bits of timber with cardboard or paper srunched up and stuffed under kindling to make a wind tunnel effect

I.e

l***l Two bits of big long burn timber
== kindling and more solid timber
* is paper scrunched up.

This method works well with damp timber as well as long as kindlig is dry, no need to use woof wood!

Keep it clean guys things are getting dirty! :op

I do - the stuff I don't burn! It's an old trick, my grandfather taught me - does wonders for rhubarb.

I confess the rhubarb was a fib but I do mix it with kero to make an excellent firelighter. Frankly given the amount of engine oil we burn in the normal use of our vehicles I doubt the one litre or so I burn on the fire each year will make much difference to the ecology of the planet.
