Price was quoted for coming out to van location and fitting camera to car and to van , wiring it all up and fitting a screen in the Cruiser .

Is that quote over the top , or around the mark ?

Thanks ,

Willie .

Hi Willie,
It sounds a bit over the top, although it would depend on what kind of screen you are getting. Some motorised in-dash units can be over $1000 just by themselves. Cameras also come as either CCD or CMOS, the latter being a lot cheaper, but giving a somewhat inferior picture. CMOS are OK for occasional use (e.g. reversing only) but annoying when used constantly as a rear view mirror alternative. Most advertised kits are below $500. I don't know how much cost would be involved in installation, but wouldn't take it anywhere near $1600. I would suggest getting another quote or at least insisting on a breakdown of where the $1600 is going.
Cheers
Gerry

Is that u Wiilie Mail me, will give u full instructions Would only take a Saturday to do it yourself Is that for the gear as well, as the dearest Polaris unit is under $1000 and they would fit it pretty quick and I would think for a lot less than that.
Depending on what u want, if its like mine parts would cost less than $600 and its only time to do it. For $1600 I would nearly drive down and do it.

Hi Graham ,

I am an incapable clutz with things like this

I have decided to mount my camera on the high rear bumper of the Bushtracker though - not on the roof . That way it will not get caught on the roof cover .

I am going to ask them what brand of camera and screen they are quoting on .

It sounds like they are a tad expensive .

Thanks ,

Willie .

I have a piece of foam with a cutout in it that I just put over the camera when I put the cover on, the cover holds it in place. Survived the last two weeks storms OK. And cant get pinched from up high hopefully.
Also I found as I said in the other thread Dont get a camera with IR. They arent as good in bright sunlight as a straight mini cam. Tried both and can assure you its true. The Swann with IR had no colour everyhing was a washed out beige. If u put a cover over it like a bucket it improved but was no good in bright daylight. The $49 minicam from Ebay is perfect.
Also a separate screen is FARRRRRRR better than a rear vison mirror one as it reflects and cant show the pic thru the image very well. It will if u point it down away from the window but that defeats the point a bit doesnt it. All found out by trial and error and $ wasted

"Don't get a camera with IR. They aren't as good in bright sunlight as a straight mini cam"

My Poron has IR and its excellent in bright sunlight as well as at night.
I would suggest that the camera you had was perhaps faulty in its aperture control.

Mine was a SWANN and when I quizzed them the tech said
" They are optimized for low light conditions as its hard to build one which is optimized for both".
Only going on pure experience.
It could be a mismatch between makes but I think not with thisa particular one. I realise others have had success but just am just impating my trial and failure with this one.
The ordinary one works fine and i can reverse into my garage with just the brake and reverse lights and see quite well. Havent tried the van in the dark yet.

I should add that the IR is not all that effective at night anyway as the IR LED's only emit enough light to see a couple of meters.
I agree with you about the brake and reversing light assist at night.

Hi Willie

I have heard no complaints about the work Sound in Motion do with fitting the cameras to new BTs and tow vehicles, and thought that this added around $2 or 3g to the price of a new rig - not sure about that price though. We went for the Hong Kong eBay $9 cameras and did the work ourselves - of course the result is not as good.

i bought a relacement mirror(interior)3.5"screen with 2 colour night vision cameras to fit to rear of cruiser and caravan which might i add work brilliantly off ebay to my door for $208!! i found problems finding room for another gadget on my dash/console as it is pretty well full.the screen is plenty big enough to see what is going on behind both vehicles.full function remote controlled as well.i dont think $1600 is good to say the least.cheers Paul

I organized a deal for a few on her awhile ago. (Roachie was one who bought one also)
Poron camera and Monitor was about $295-.
I think Roachie later got another camera for his Ultimate Camper and that was about $130- odd dollars.
This brand is also marketed as Polaris and and about three other brand names.
Easy to fit do it yourself in a few hours.

Me thinks these guys have seen you coming.

G'day John,
Yeh, the extra camera, with it's associated wiring, plugs etc, was about another $300-; but that's still only $600- all-up and I fitted it myself (and I'm a banker, not a mechanic's back-side...hahaha)

goodday willie
buy the bits and then get a price for install only if you dont feel you want to do it yourself
tell them you want a conduit piping under the van to protect the wires otherwise most just put a few cable ties on and afterv a few trips they become brittle break off and the cables dangle (i have had to slowly refix the cable underneath the van for my solar power)

Why not run the wires thru the chassis like I did . I pushed a piece of alky water pipe up till it got to an opening at the front and just pulled the cable thru. Dead easy ( provided you have an entry point up near the front.)

Steve and Graham ,

I will check out both ideas , but I certainly won't let them run them exposed under the van or car .

Actually the wires will be going straight through the back wall of the van into a big cargo hold . I am not sure where I will take them then .

You guys are embarrassing me into trying to do this myself .

Thanks ,

Willie .

The other trick to running wires through any sort of tube is to use string, tie a cotton ball on the end and suck it through with a vacuum cleaner (don't let SWMBO catch you in the garden doing this through irrigation pipe with the good vacuum cleaner!)

I just had a Polaris fitted to the new bus and it was about $1200 fitted which included a voltage reducer (bus is 24volt) and full installation, it is on all the time and also has infrared for night vision.
Works very well, think the model had a '60' in it.
Make sure you get a wired one as the wireless ones pick up a lot of interference.

I've no idea who did it as the dealer organised the installation before delivery. I found the model of camera and screen on the net somewhere (can't find it now) and it was about $500 to buy outright. They also supplied the stepdown transformer and then ran the wiring the full length of the bus to install the camera right up the top just below the roofline at the rear. the dealer said it took 2 guys 2/3rds of the day to do the installation and the wiring is all out of sight. So $1200 was probably reasonable, I wasn't paying ;-))

G'Day Willie,

I got a 4.5" screen and CCD camera wired into the Patrol for $600 total. This included extra wiring to the back of the vehicle for caravan fitment at a later date.

They quoted $250 for "heavy duty" CCD camera on van and another $100 to fit.

Total $950.

Me thinks for $1600 they meet way too many people with more money than sense.

Regards

Rolande

Perhaps if you have a TV tuner card or an AV or video input. I bought that screen to hook up to the notebook which is going to be perched on the cargo barrier and the screen has AV, VGA
( notebook input) and TV nd is a touchscreen as well So if u had one of them $225 from Honkers you could run it into it but only 1 thing at a time.
Would be better with separate small screen Will send u a pic on Saturday of what Im thinking of adding beside my 8" screen which will do the job exactly.
God any more screens and I will need a copilot.LOL

I just read about a great idea on the Bushtracker Owners Group Forum .

A member ( Tellem Bugrem ) installed a small flat screen TV in the back of his 4WD and he looks at the screen through his rear view mirror .

Solves the problem of where to put another screen . I know it's naughty , but I was thinking of maybe mounting one on the cargo barrier .

The installation would need to be quick detachable so that it could be removed when the van was not on the back and I wanted to see out the back window . ALTHOUGH , if you angled the screen and the mirror , you could mount the screen off-centre .

This idea has certainly got me thinking .

Willie .
