More power for 2.7 petrol prado?

Hi All

We have inherited a 90 series RV Prado with the 2.7 petrol motor and manual gearbox in mint condition with 125,000K on the clock which drives very nicely compared to our '91 LPG GQ Patrol with 300,000km.

We are considering keeping it for touring purposes and would throw suspension, tyres, roof rack, dual batteries and long range petrol tank at.

We have towed our 1 tonne camper trailer with it and it is just bearable in the power department (much like our tired Patrol).

Is it possible to turbo/supercharge these suckers without degrading the longevity and reliability of the engine and more to the point how much would this cost approx.?

If we could throw some cash knowing it will deliver the power/reliability we would consider keeping it as a tourer for the long term rather than changeover to something else.

What are your experiences/comments?

Can't comment on the owing capability or extra power. However I owned a 2.7 for 8 years from new. It never gave a prob - with light footed driving. Traded it at 280,000 km. BFGs worked well - giving better than 100,000 if regularly rotated.

I fitted the 3.4lt Prado's sub fuel tank complete with duel throated filler neck, pump switch and subtank fuel gauge - all fit straight into the 2.7. It gets complicated to fit the whole 3.4 fuel system. So I configured it to pump from the subtank to the main only. This meant watching pumping progress until it had pumped all fuel to the main.

Never a moment's problem with this - found the 2.7 to be very similar fuel consumption to the 3.4 in same conditions.

Think the 2.7 is also cheaper to maintain.

All in all an excellent experience - but I did notice the lack of power around town and in the hills. But in the outback and deserts - excellent.
