Just need some advice from you all on what to do. A few weeks ago I won a car alarm on 3AK (melb radio station), and was told that it was worth $600.00 and had all the bells and whistles. I was stoked, first time I won anything.

Got the alarm installed. They installed the base model which is worth $300.00.

Contacted the car alarm people and was told no mistake made - bad luck.

Contacted 3AK - received abusive emails from them after waiting weeks for them to reply.

I know I should be grateful and I am. Now I have remote central locking and its a good quality unit - no dispute there.

Do you think I should let the matter rest?? Please help!!!

Johnad

Perhaps the TOTAL package was worth $600. $300 for unit and $300 for installation. Just a thought.

If not the case then a 'deal is a deal' free or otherwise, give them some stick.

Not sure if you will get it on air though, they use the delay button and would have time to 'kill' the conversation before it goes on the air.

Rememeber the 'pen is mightier than the sword'. I have found it is pretty hard to ignore a letter, and it is always good to have as support for the future should things not progress as you would want.

I followed up with that and the $300 unit is $379 installed. You should read the emails I received from the guy at 3AK for which I waited over 4 weeks for a reply. They make interesting reading.

My grandmother won $10000 of camping gear some years ago in a raffle or something. I thought, you little ripper everything I've ever wanted and I'll be able to buy it off her for half price. When the gear got delivered I had a look at it and thought that there wasn't much there for 10 grand. Had a look at the price list and everything was marked up to the hilt. 32L Engel fridge for $1950, 20L Water Drum for $38, 6ft x 8ft Tarp for $75 etc - nearly fell off the bar stool!!! But I suppose a $300 security system is better than a fridge full of hot beer!! So you can't be to hard up - but I would still milk it for all its worth.

Cheers,
Hughesy

there is no price control and anyone can charge or imply any price they like for items offered for sale or and including those offered for competitions.

the old old story...you dont get something for nothing...and if you do its purported price is most likely overinflated.

Unfortunately Johnad, your going to have to suffer the humilation (If I could call it that) of being duped......like we all have been at one time or another.Richard

Hi Johnad, You were told you had won a $600 prize and you have received a $300 prize You Should feel ripped off and disappointed! We sit hear and listed to the program thinking ..Gee that’s a good prize and think good things about the station and the supplier of the prize – after all they are promoting their business so that they become top of mind when we are looking to purchase a product which they carry. Name the Company so that we make sure we never purchase anything form them …and we can also tell all our friends!
This runs “true to form” with the bloke at 3AK. I have had first hand experience with him and another company I was involved with several years ago …they were giving away a holiday …lets just say there was no way you or any one else from the general public was going to win it! Ethics and integrity ??!!

As mentioned by barnsy, cut, paste and post the reply you got form 3AK for us all to read so that we can all see the type of people they are!

Cheers
Alex

Still trying to work out how to cut and paste, not very good with computers. The name of the car alarm I had installed was Cobra. When I got it installed the guy tried to sell me a cruise control as well, said he would give me a ripper price. He said $750 and they normally sell for $850, but when I later checked the price anonymously, it was $750 anyway.

Write a letter straight to the General Manager or owner of 3AK, with copies of the emails you recieved. You don't have to take the short end of the stick from anybody

Johnad,

Life's too short to be so agrieved about something so trivial. Radio Stations and other Media are what they are. You received something for nothing. Just take it on the chin and get on with your life.

Apart from that everyone else on this thread is getting STRESSED :-)))
Cheers, Willem

I'm surprised that some of you guys think this kind of behaviour is acceptable.
In my mind fraud is fraud regardless of wether it's a competition or retail sale.

My advice? - Write to consumer affairs.

Sorry Willem but I believe this is a "go for the throat" job. The only way to achieve ethical behaviour is to demand transparency. If Johnad wants to make sure others do not suffer the same alleged fate as himself then lodge a complaint with Consumer Affairs/Small Claims Tribunal. Other option is to check that they had a Raffle & Bingo permit I am sure an application to either of these bodies with an account of your complaint would get attention. If they have done nothing dodgy then they have nothing to hide!

Good luck.

Go for the throat....hell a strong reaction for something so trivial aint it....he won a competition ...he didnt suffer a fate ...

Hell, would he had enetred the competition if he knew it was only worth $300? I reckon he would have. So does it really matter what its true value is. Lets hope it has the ability to prevent a theft!!Richard

Don't take crap like that from anyone. If one accepts it, why not another..and another and so on

It's unethical to say the least and if you've been given the cold shoulder with a bit of hot tongue, its shock and awe time baby!!

Even if you get no further than having your say, that say can have a lot longer effect on a business or radio station than would and easy $300 to keep the customer happy.

Clearly they are not concerned about YOU the customer, so do we care about them?
NOT ME!!

You can't get into trouble for telling the truth. Defamation is about telling a lie or making people believe in something other than the truth.

In this case, as you put it, you were promised one thing and got another. If you had entered a competition for a Rolls Royce and were given a mini then told to piss off...would you be happy? I doubt it. Same thing, different scale.

Just tell your story publicly as it really was and let the listeners decide.

That's my 5 cents worth.

Bruce, according to State regs on promotional lotteries, the prize value must be over $5000 before a licence is required. It looks like big business wins again, and the battlers, like us, strike out.

not licence for the lottery but the licence to run a radio station for which the criteria is alot more detailed than that of a lottery licence
