I have been informed by an inspector that my caravan requires 15inch rims with 195R15C tyres. The van is an old millard from NSW and I have brought it over to WA. The original wheels are tiny little 9 inch rims with load d range tyres.

I thought the rims and tyres were selected on weight?
Can anyone clear up why the 15's are needed?

Not sure of the carrying capacity of 9" tyres but I wouyld be doubtful that if between them they could manage 1,000 kg or so. Perhaps that's why the direction to change them to 15" Why not ask the Inspector to explain his reasoning. Can't do any harm.

Load range 'D' are a specific rating for trailer tyres which are not very common in the great land downunder. Never the less, they are an 8ply with a 1100kg rating. This is an American rating system so it is possible that your inspector wants to see an Australian rated tyre - dunno.

Brooka27,

A few years ago there were a lot of big boat trailers (trailers for "BIG" boats) that were fitted with tandem axles with 9 inch alloy type wheels and fairly heavy duty tyres. Haven't seen too many lately though. Tyres might not be available any more.

If you can find 14 or15 inch rims and LT tyres that will fit and not foul the caravan bodywork it may well be a cheaper option than trying to chase up suitably rated 9" tyres.
Apart from that issue you may have a hard time convincing some "know-it-all"(If it's not in the book, it's not legal) inspector that the curent 9" tyres are in fact suitably rated.

The 9 inch ones may come in handy if you need to lower the van to fit into a shed or similar.

Disco.
