Hi, GREAT SITE! Can somebody help. I have a loud scream from steering pump and shudder through steering wheel (60 series) only when cold, first thing of a cold morning. OK when warmed up and travelled a few Ks. Somebody suggested tighten belts....but checked that. It's embarrasing when sneaking out of campground early to go fishing. Thanks.

Have you checked the idler pulley? Friend of mine had a problem with squealing belt when turning and found the idler pulley bearing completely locked up.

Tried checking fluid, sounds like the belts, but youve checked that, so next is the pump itself..

hit the pump with some silcone spray & the belts with some soap by holding a block of soap against the belton both sides of belt while it is running, if this does not solve the problem you will need to look at what the others have sujested

Try replacing the belt all together and make sure it is super tight. If the belt has been slipping before or if it is old then the belt especially in the circumstances you describe will not grip properly even when tight. a standing vehicle with low revs and wide tyres puts enormous strain on a pump.

Just be careful holding things against running V-belts; you can lose your fingers in nothing flat!

G'day,

I have a HJ60 and on these cold QLD mornings my cruiser has been making exactly the same screaming/whirring noises when i first start up in the morning when turning.. I fades away after a few mintues. I have been a bit concerned about it also, but so far can't work out what the problem is. I have checked the belts and fluid and its all fine.

Any mechanics out there?

JB.
The screaming niose on start up is usually the alternator pulley, because the battery voltage is low the alternator is batteling to get the system voltage up to the correct value, have a look at the alternator pulley its probably worn. Eric.

Hi Try new oil but go to steering place and get proper steering fluid. It is thicker than ATF oil, and wont squeel as much. If you have oil around the pump, your inlet oring may be sucking air with cold oil, cavitating the pump till the oil flows better hot.
