Diesel oil change intervals

I have just purchased another ute for work to be used as a run around vehicle. On checking the oil change intervals on our other diesel vehicles there are obviously quite different trains of thought.

Mazda Bravo 06 2.5L - 10,000 km's

Rodeo 03 3L - 10,000 km's

Kia Pregio 04 & 05 - 7,500 km's

Hilux 3L (non turbo) - 5,000 km's

My question is, is 10,000 to long or are Toyota and Kia drumming up more work ?

You cannot go wrong if u change the oil every 5000 and filter every 10000......
The best thing for an engine is to change the oil regulary

Can't quite see your logic there???, Why have clean oil and a dirty filter, If you don't change the filter when you change the oil, in my opinion it would be better to change the filter and let the oil do more distance.

Hey Axle,
An oil filter is there to filter the oil obviously.... An oil filter could probably last for 4 oil changes before it gets clogged up.........
I am just going by the service requirments that we were taught in TAFE 20 years ago.....
But to answer your question with another question.......
Do you change your Fuel Filter everytime you put new fuel in your car?

I fully concur with Exfilm. Having clocked up over 500,000km in diesel vehicles over the years I always have done oil changes every 5000km & filter changes every 10,000km & never had a problem with filters breaking down or clogging up. Cheers.

Although!!, some areas and their crap, fuel?.


Mate in regard to the oil filter side of things, yes a filter will do more than one oil change interval, but then theres filtering systems that are superior to others to.

As you would know the hydraulic system in a excavator is a interesting one, the manufactures are more worried about filter changes regulary than oil changes, eg,Sumitomo on average conditions can run the oil safeley for 10,000 hrs. , as they have that nephron filter which filters down to 1or2 microns.

Fair enough axle........ lol
I am not too keen on changing the hydraulic oil in my new second hand Kobelco SK210 all that often....... Prefer to do the filters only. Was reading the brochure on it and it holds almost 200 litres of hydraulic oil. That would cost a small fortune to replace..... you got me there....... :)

The Hilux is an old style diesel - indirect injection - makes more soot, hence 5k intervals.

Yeah, look I change oil and filter every 5000, you may think thats overkill but filters are cheap and if you want it to last.......Just give it pleanty of clean oil, IMHO.

so what are you going to do about oil changes with the new 4.5L?...Toyota say 20,000km.....I have problems with that and have decided to go for 10k with mine......

have always done 5k on hilux over the years

I agree, i have and wlll always change my filters at 5,000k, no matter what the dealers say.

The newer common rail diesels are cleaner, and the new CI speck oil is designed for these engines to get longer oil changes.

My older style 2.8 is like your toyota, change filter and oil every 5,000k. I compromise on cost and use a good mineral oil rather than a synthetic. Use a CH or CG oil.

The sump capacity is a factor to consider
I know with mid range trucks of 10 years ago the sumps held say 15 to 18 litres
Now with the new CRD Euro spec engines they allow a longer drain interval but the similar size engine may now hold 30 litres or more
So it would be interesting to compare sump capacitys on those vechiles you mention in the 1 st post

2006 Nissan Navara Service Book recommends 5000ks for severe
conditions and 10000 for normal driving.

you cant compare trucks with 4bys. If you take the latest euro 4 diesal engines from europe they go for 60,000ks between services, and garanteed for the same sort of lfe the older trucks with 10 to 15,000ks oil changes, things are changing and we have to get our heads out of the sand. The japanese diesals are some of the dirtiest motors running (i own a GQ patrol ). The models you have stated are all different spec of diesal, indirect & direct injection which has a big difference on servicing intervilles. Col
