It wasn't that long ago that it was accepted that the way to circumnavigate Oz was in an anti-clockwise direction during the winter/dry months of the year. But has anyone noticed that the continental high which used to be centred over the Alice during those months has for the last few years been much further South?. Last year the high pressure belt spent most our winter positioned in the Bass strait area which was probably the main reason Vic has been in drought for so long. Last winter for instance you would have had favourable winds travelling from Melbourne to Perth direct.......any comments?...silverback

They must have had the same "favourable winds travelling from Melbourne to Perth direct" in 1997, I just can't get past the Northern Territory into FNQ and keep returning back to the South West of WA.

Yep. yer right.

Probably cyclical as with everything else to do with our weather.

We live a short way from the western start(Horrocks Pass SA) of the Temperate Zone. Normally our winds blow in from the west or north-west. From the end of December 2007 until now however, we have had inordinate winds from the north-east, blowing hot dry conditions our way. We have measured 1mm of rain since 26 December 2007 whereas our average rain for this period should be around 100mm.

Even cyclones in the Pilbara have not affected our area this year as they have done in past times

We are in a winter rainfall zone so we will be looking forward to some relief soon.

Cheers
