My 2.8L diesel ( non turbo) pajero gets about 15L per 100km's when towing my small 700kg van , or put another way about 600km's per 90L tank, does that sound about right?? Also will a range of 600km's be enough to get me between most
places around Australia , particularly up north and across the top.

Morning
John.
That fuel consumption sounds about right for a non turbo diesel towing a (small) van. You could actually improve that by bolting on the turbo which would allow you to hold higher gears, but that may not be a viable option for you.
Is a 600km range enough?
Well the answer is of course “that depends”, but I am sure that the range would be enough for most
places that you would want to tow a van. It would certainly be enough if you stick to the main bitumen roads.

I had a 2.8 4 years ago it got around the same milage towing and it was a turbo. I removed the orignal fuel tank and put a replacement 150ltr tank in that gave it a great range. The first big trip I did with the new tank took me from
Brisbane to Windora before I topped it up to make sure I had enough fuel to get to
Birdsville, I was towing a loaded offroad camper trailer there were 4 of us in the car fully loaded.

Does seem a little high - I have a 2.8tdi GU Patrol and it returned and average 12.33ltrs/100km for the 10664 kms from Queanbeyan to The Tip (
Cape York) and return. It was
well loaded inside as
well as having a steel roof rack with an OZTENT, 2 x spare wheels, and a storage box.
The 3.0lt non-turbo HiLux that was travelling with me returned a little higher at 13.2 ltrs/100km
