Latest Overlander does a 3 way comparo with top spec 200 series
& Disco 3 & Merc GL 320. In regard to 200, tester points out that
the fact that the 6 slot is unnatainable before 100kph & falls out as soon as throttle is applied isnt a problem as 5th will deliver better fuel economy at Australian Highway speed limits. Maybe so,
but what is 6th for then? Then, in a letter to the editor, a new
buyer of a 200 complains of the very same problem. Not a problem is the reply, even though he admits to receiving many
letters of complaint re the same issue. Toyota says its not a fault
as the auto knows where the best gear is for the most efficient use is. The letter writer asks why cant he take advantage of the
huge available torque by using it in 6th gear. Response is.. "floor
the throttle if you want to use more torque more often".
Now is that the response to increase your credibility?.
And lastly, the tester spends a whole page of his regular column
defending the 200 6th gear issue by waffling on about ratios &
then says if we lived in a country with more liberal speedlimits, the
200 gearing would be just the ticket. Excuse me?? How does a
higher speed limit get the thing to hold 6th when any throttle
causes immediate drop out?
"Not that it really matters. 5th gear is plenty tall enough for
relaxed cruising". Says it all really.
Would you buy a car from this man?....:)).....oldbaz.

I recon quite enough as well as drove numerous automatic vehicles to form very strong opinion that I would buy an automatic only if I lost my left leg or left arm. YMMV though.

Cheers

The wonderful thing about this country is that there is no law that says you must drive a manual or auto car (yet).
Unfortunately that doesnt apply to the LC200 Sahara. If you plan to drive in 20 years time you had better get used to an auto.

The auto vs manual is as pointless for the 200 as it is for the new 70
The auto is a clear winner on the 200 and the manual just as decisive winner in the 70

Dear Oldbaz, you just hit the nail in the head! Even now my choices very limited – even LC200 (does not like it anyway) not came in manual! Fortunately there is light in the end of tunnel as least for 4WD – LC70. But it is not so good when it came to sedan. In 1 or 2 years time I need to replace my family sedan. My criteria is big enough, enough grunt, plenty of comfort features (i.e. semi-luxury) and manual must. Only 2 candidate around – Subary Liberty 3.0R Spec B and Lexus IS250 Prestige! (please, do not offer falcodores!) And you call this freedom of choice! Well, will drive LC70 then :-)))

Would you expect anything less from Toyotalander???

Who do you reckon pees on the editors pockets the most? Would have nothing to do with Toyota being their largest advertiser, would it???
