Today we lost a true Australian who dedicated his life to bettering this country, John Button. The man worked tirelessly and this probably led to his premature death at 74.

Sure, he may have been "just" a politician, but my friends, a lot of them are actually in it for the betterment of Australia. They're not all crooks and liars.

Not since the passing of Jim Killen, Neville Bonner, and Jim McClelland, have I felt so sad at the passing of one of our elected representatives. These people have moved me.

I thought this said it well, from a media quote.

Announcing his passing, Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard said: "John Button went into politics with the reputation of being an honest man who spoke his mind and he came out of politics with the reputation of being an honest man who spoke his mind.

Jim ,

He was a great man and I was saddened to read of his death this morning .

It is nice to hear someone who is more concerned about the passing of a great human being , than their favourite dog .

Their dog might have been greatly loved , but do we really need to hear about it on this forum .

Willie .

Gavin ,
I gather you enjoy reading those maudlin woof obituaries ,dripping with sadness and loss for "my faithful old friend".

Either way, your post was not relevant.

If this is a serious question, I suggest you do a google search.

Start with Button Car Plan and go from there.

Firstly Jim, understand that politically, I am an atheist and have been since voting at 18 was introduced, forcing me to to make a decision three years earlier than I needed to, before having
gained any political knowledge with maturity.
Additionally, I am not one to malign a person recently deceased. From what I understand and my own observations over the years, the man was highly regarded as an individual and so be it.
Having said that, I did "google" as you suggested and have had my thoughts regarding some of this persons " achievements " confirmed.

Some results of the Button Car Plan.
The massive loss of jobs in the Australian auto industry,
The contribution to the imbalance of import / export payments as tariffs are reduced and the additional vehicles needed for this country have to be imported as local manufacturers have model limits placed on them. e.g. Toyota strangle hold on the availability of a 6cyl trayback in the market place until very recently.
( "Toyota Workmate"...indeed )
Failure to remove the government subsidy of local car manufacturers.

Further, the ushering in of a union official as a prime minister, could hardly be called an achievement. Some redeeming of this action did occur however with disputes with that leader, over the financial management of the country at that time.

This is not intended to start a political debate, it is simply an observation of documented occurrences over the years.

As I suspected; don't even know why I bothered reponding to you in the first place.

I suppose I have another name to put on the list of clowns to be ignored.

Ahhhh...............Rudeness, the great fallback when thought stops.

I had hoped you would have had a list of John Button's attributes handy when I originally posted.
Things like his ability to make a decision and stand by it, his being a strategist, being able to joke at his own expense, having a career not blemished by tawdry behaviour, not to mention being a bit of a visionary ( albeit cloudy on occasion ). These are some of the things that made him the man he was.

But no, it was just another party support situation. Remembering a politician for policies and legislature, is a bit like remembering Peter Brock just because he won a couple of car races.
Bit of an injustice, I would think.
