HI all,
Recently purschased a Standard 100 series 99 model, knowing that the gearbox or transfer case has a whine. done 152km non turbo 1hz diesel. notice it more at 1ookm/h hour and back off. as soon as put foot on clutch it goes away.

have herd standard 100's have lighter gearbox? r150 or something.

was considering, change out from wreckers and fit hevy gearbox mabye. or rebuild ??

also thought is it transfer case? how do i determine that?
any adivce thanks

Yes the standard diesel 100's do have the lighter box, same as a Prado.
They do fail prematurely, one of our 4wd club members has had his rebuilt three times so far in less then 200k.
To isolate the noise location between gearbox and transfer try putting the transfer in neutral and the gearbox in gear. Note however that this may cause the transfer to make more noise as the gears are unloaded and can float a bit.
Be aware too that a rear diff whine can appear to come from the transmission.
The only way to test this is to drop the rear tailshaft put it in H4 , lock the front hubs and go for a drive. Be aware that in this scenario you are driving a 3 tonne mini minor, torque steer!!

WHO is rebuilding the gearbox????? BOB THE BUILDER!!!
I hope he realises you need to use the clutch in a manual. Don't want to sound cynical, but someONE is obviously at fault here.
Any Prado you pick puts out more power and torque than standard 100s, so many, many Prados should be just pulling off the road with gearbox failures if these are weak. Surely.

apparently only one rebuild, under wty!. The last two have been full new replacements. Suburban use with occasional weekend away towing a camper trailer.

That sounds like a diff whine to me, time to replace the crown wheel and pinion, and put a bearing kit through it.

I have a ST 100 series and the gearbox is fine at 265000km but the dif had a rebuild at 200000, if it happens when you back off I would bet money on the diff.

I had the same happen in a troopy and one of the GXLs as well all diffs.

Cheers Steve.

Just to clarify, If the noise stops when you back off this would indicate the load being taken of the crown wheel and pinion therefore no noise, I you backed off and the noise was there this would indicate the bearings catching up on them selves and that noise would be consistent with a gearbox.

Cheers Steve.

I spoke with the boss when I got back from lunch and he agrees it's the diff.

The reason being is, when you back of or take your foot of the clutch, the load on the crown wheel and pinion is released therefore no pressure on the gears, that means no noise.

Think of it like this, the gears in your gearbox run on a shaft, they spin on a bearing so if the bearings are gone, as I said the noise will be constant with or without you backing off,as the noise will be the bearings catching up, the diff is driven by the pinion spinning and driving the crown wheel so the pinion is forcing the crown wheel around, so when you back off the pinion backs off and just spins without pressure you put your foot down again and the pinion picks up the crown wheel and makes the noise again, because it is back under pressure.

Take it to a specialist and if I am Wrong I will pay for your membership to ExplorOz, thats how confident I am.

Cheers Steve.

I'll back what Steve is saying - it will be the rear diff (I'll go you halves in the membership steve if we're both wrong;).

I have a 01 Standard HZJ105 with 275000km and it has the exact noise you describe - that is a whine not a rumble.

Unless its really bad I wouldn't be too worried. Just start putting $100 a month away and after 6-7 months buy a recon diff centre and swap it out. I haven't even bothered saving yet ;)

My wifes 100 series V8 Auto has this sort of wine and I believe it was caused by her driving the vehicle on ashpalt with the diff lock on without her knowledge. (The kids pressed the button, and she's a lady driver right.?)

Can this be fixed easily.? Where would the noise be coming from based on my prognosis.)

Every time my wife is in the car it has a whine, it seems to be coming from the passenger's seat.
