Shortly we will be heading off on a 4 month trip towing an off road trailer. We will be heading west on the Gary Junction Road to Kunawarritji [well 33], as we want to end up at Newman we are considering travelling down the CSR to well 23 then the Tallawanna Track to Newman.
Could any members have advise us as to the the suitability of this section for trailers. Our main worries are sand hills. Also any info on the Tallawanna track would be appreciated.
Our other option is straight through from well 33 to Marble Bar via the Telfer Mine road.
We have a good reliable rig with recovery and communication gear but will be travelling as a single vehicle.
Any advise on these routes would be appreciated.
Thanks
John

CSR south from Well 33 was very corrugated, it took us two full days to get to the talwana track, with no trailers, in a LC 100 and Prado. Lots of sand dunes, then back to corrugations again. Dunes were fairly easy, but we had no trailers.

Yep it is a pretty easy run south from Well 33 and taking a trailer would'nt be a worry. Yes, corrugated as mentioned. The run from KMart(Kunawarritji)to Marble Bar, may be more interesting and scenic especiallywhen you get closer to MB.

Just run lower tyre pressures on the trailer.

The dunes between 23 & 33 are some of the bigger ones on the Stock Route and at times can be quite challenging. Last trip we crossed them it could almost have been done in 2wd but the 1st time we had to have several goes at many dunes with a couple of recoveries on the multiple head one's so really current conditions can play a big part.
Hard to say how you'll go not knowing your vehicle, trailer & how heavy it all is, power to weight being a big factor in towing in sand.

John,

In 2006 we travelled across the Gary Junction to Kunawarritji then on the Telfer Road. We didn't go directly to Marble Bar, we wound our way around to W13794 then Skull Springs Road to Nullagine and from there up to Marble Bar.

We were travelling alone, towing our camper trailer and had no problems at all. The road from Kunawarritji to Punmu was much the same as the Gary Junction - some corrugations, stony patches and wash outs but once on the Telfer Road it was like a highway.

We thoroughly enjoyed Skull Springs Road through to Nullagine, really scenic and very interesting.

All the best

Viv

We travelled the same route last year. One of our group towed a TVan from 33 to 23 without any issues, and managed all the dunes first time. He was well set-up and experienced, but likes to travel with others when he has the TVan.
