Haven't had much of a chance to do much serious 4wding over the last year, just the odd moderate drive.
Today I made a big one due to lack of practice. Approached a whoop-de-do on a steep slope and the bloody thing had a rut in it. Stupidly, I let the left front drop into the rut. Got the car hung up.
Step 1. Roll back and have another go with more throttle. No effect.
Step 2. Repeat Step 1 with excessive throttle until I smelled burning rubber. No effect.
HMMM. I'm in trouble.
I've been driving an Auto 4wd drive for years and now back in a manual.
Draw on the memory bank. Try a
hill reverse start to get back down and try a different line.
Hill reverse starts sound simple but does tend to make your sphincter retract. That is unless you practice them often, so as to be comfortable with the procedure.
Anyway, after three reverse efforts I was safely back far enough to have another upward attempt and went over with ease.
Two points:
1. Practice your techniques regularly.
2. Autos are so much easier, and safer, for irregular 4wders.
Jim.

Made a good one myself today Jim. Heading along
Goolwa beach towards
Murray Mouth with Lyndon K and Bernadette, their friend and Olcoolone {Richard and Lyn}. Tyres down to 18psi, going nicely out in front. Got to an area that was much softer, Iproceed to help Lyndon decide which path he may choose to take towing their Tvan, couple hundred metres on I start to sense we are in a bit of strife. On the two way I announce "don't come this way". Try low range, no good. Said to lez, oh
well, we'll let the tyres down more. I bend down to let some air out, HUBS ARE NOT LOCKED IN. Locked the hubs in and no more problem.Hahahahah.
