Here's one for the trackRanger and Ozi users and please pardon my ignorance here but I'm just getting my teeth into the computer based nav programs. With the constant improvement in resolution of images on Google earth, is there anything that would preclude you from loading the photographs in Jpeg format into Ozi or TrackRanger to be utilised as a map? You would surely be able to insert enough reference points into the photo's before downloading or printing them, to then use the programs calibration system to align them. Is is possible and is anyone doing/done it?
Thanks. Mick

The only problem you would have is getting them configered and you would only be able to use them at the scaned res with ozi you need at least 6 good referance points

Another problem would be the size of the actual scanned picture

Hi Mick
I imported some images last year from Google for real time moving map situations. In the end I didn't think it was worth it but here is was I did.
In Google Earth save the image as a JPG using File, Save etc.
Import the file into Oziexplorer and select Load and Calibrate Map Image.
Use as many fixed known points as you can to calibrate but if not many then
check "Polynomial Calibration for Map" in the Map Advanced Options.
Hope this helps.
Alan.

Hello - some clever people out there are onto it and there are a number free programs available that automatically grab GE images and create OE calibration + image files ready to go. Have a read of this
GPS Australia Forum Discussion on Google Earth
You can also just do screen captures and do calibration yourself easy enough, if you only need small area.
Cheers

mmm
I downloaded gMapMaker and easily enough downloaded a 9718 km square section of the Great Sandy at zoom level 10. At zoom level 12 it locked up and apparently google has now blacklisted me.
Hopefully Google will forget I was a bad boy and let me try again in a few days....
Next time perhaps I should try for a smaller area :))
Thats good info Greg, thanks

The guys at Google have short memories.
Have just downloaded 648 square kms at zoom level 14.
Map image size is about 13mb.
Calibration seems to be fairly accurate.
This is great software.
Thanks again Greg.
Cheers

Yes - I have heard that your isp address gets temporally banned if you try to download too much. I have only had a go with GoogleMV ages ago and never got far as had problems and didn't persevere. Will be interested to know how you go in the long term with gMapMaker.
