A mitsibushi challenger LS (2002) with factory fitted ABS came home from a drive thisevening with the stop lights on even with the key off. Breaks were not hot and seemed to be working OK during the drive.

Disconnected the battery and then reconnected the battery - stop lights off with the key off and turn on when I press the break pedal.

Any suggestion on what to check - mechanical or auto-electricial?

Do you have a 'brake' controller fitted, the early Tekonsha Voyager did give this sort of problem, or maybe the stop light switch is sticking, unlikely, but sometimes it's the simple things.

Shaker is right.
To test disconnect the Brake controller and try again. If you do not have a brake controller for a trailor then sorry cannot help.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
