As some of you might know I had a mishap on the way to Capertee on the 16th for the 4wd association 2nd 1/4 meeting hosted by my club, RareBreed 4WD club, the diagnosis was NOT good, as well as the turbo it seems it has damaged a piston or two as well.

To repair/rebuild that motor is going to cost $17000+ (fuel pump $2500, long motor $9500, 4 injectors @600ea = $2400, installation and labour $1800++++++= 17000+) at the end of the day it’s still the same motor that I have lost confidence in.

I have been offered a low Km (approx 35000km) 2004-5, 100sr 4.2 Turbo diesel Toyota engine, Including automatic gearbox & transfer box combination (ex insurance right off) for $16000 + installation (approx $19000 total) The transfer box will be converted to part time 4wd.

While the Chevy V8 option seemed attractive it is still an older motor reconditioned, whatever that means, and it will add 150-200kg extra weight to the front end, (the Nissan has a 3100kg GVM & 2600kg Tare) so that takes away 200kg of a total 500kg carrying capacity as compared to the Toyota engine and the existing motor both being around a similar weight.

So it seems to me that the best option is the Ttttttttoy, toyyyy, I do have difficulty saying it, I will try again, Toyooo, ttttt, one more try, Toyoota, buggar that will do.

So “On Patrol” may have to be “On Pattoy” or “Nistoy” please give me some suggestions as to what to call this BAST4RD with Mighty Nissan running gear and a TTTTT, Tooy, bugger it, that engine. Possibly I could just call it “The Bast4rd”.

It will take around 3-4 weeks to happen but it will be interesting to see how the marriage of these attributes works????????

I think I would be looking for a 4.2 Nissan motor be for before contaminating a Patrol with one of "those other"motors.

Dave
two reasons against that for me Dave
1 it's her everyday drive & auto was a must.
2 I will lose power with that motor. Add to that power loss the auto transmission drain and there you have it.

I did look at that option however.

Yes you can make an auto out of a 4.2 Nissan but you lose even more power. I did not see this as an option, and I now will have a great campfire conversation piece.

Dave,

I was talking to the King Cane Toad yesterday and he said that Pezza may have outdone him with the mods he has now done. I can't wait for the Dyno report now he he he

Just to put all of this into perspective, what I saved buying the Patrol in the first place (2.5 years old & $30000) in immaculate condition and many extras I have still got a good car and still saved some money over buying a 100LC 2003, lets see anyone buy one of them for less than $55000 with the same options and so far this will have cost less than $50000. I am not too upset. A bit p1ssed off, but not too upset.

Cant believe how dear it is for the cost of repairs. Yes even though you saved $$$ over the LC, Nissan really should be held accountable for these motors. Not starting a war between the too as I would be screwed money wise if I had to pay that sort of money for an engine that should give you a lot longer life. Yes I'm a Toyota man BUT do like the patrols and must admit are pretty much the best thing for off road use (including the one and only 80 series love em) but sounds like they should have done a lot more for there customers big time. Hope you come up with a cheaper solution and get it all fixed up so your not inconvenienced too much. All the best with the outcome. Regards Steve M

Hows it going Col,

Sorry to hear of your troubles,

Just having a read of your post , if you paid $30k for the vehicle a couple of years ago ( bit of depreciation ) and have to throw $19k at it to get it going , you may be over capitalising .

Unless you want to keep this vehicle for a long time you might be better off selling it with a broken motor. I reckon if you saw an add in the trader with a set up like that it would probably scare most people away , maybe not worth as much as you would have to put into it to get it going.

I would be going for the Chev conversion cause it probably wouldnt devalue the vehicle ( at least tell the missus that LOL ).

I give this sort of stuff a bit of thought every time my one does something funny.

Hope you sort it out.

Glenn.

Gday Glenn, long time no see,
To sell the car without a motor would be suicide, at best I would get $7000, then I would have to buy another car at $?????

At least this way I have a car that will be, hopefully reliable, and I always intended to keep it for many years so I see this as a reasonable option for a long term vehicle. When I am done with it in a few years to come then the value of the car would be minimal anyway, so what difference is a few hundred at that time.

As far as devaluation down the track, who knows anyway, if the newer ons still go pop in years to come, then this one may look attractive then???????

The Chevy motors are very heavy and a massive load over the front axle, they claim they are recons, what does that mean? a compression test and painted black?? or more, no one can or will tell me.

Glenn, this is for me a long term investment, so I am doing it "My Way" and I feel, hopefully the right way.

Colin.

I wasnt trying to shoot your ideas down , maybe just some things you may not have thought of.

You could even throw in a motor from the wreckers then trade it in on something more reliable, if you looked into it ,it may be cheaper than fitting the yota motor.

If you sold it for $7k and didnt spend $19k on it would this be the same as selling it for $26k ? , If you only spent $30k on it originally is this reasonable depretiation.

Like you said though , the only person that has to be happy with it is you.

Glenn.

Hi Col, i like the idea, i have a GQ diesel and couldn't be happier, but i do recognise the toyota motor has more power so by putting the two together i reckon you could have a great unit. Have often thought of the same conversion, the only thing is the diffs will also have to be changed. Col
