According to todays Fairfax newspapers the price per barrel of oil is directly related to the value of the US Dollar and any 1% movement in the value up or down will result in an opposite move of $4US per barrel. All I can say is...GO THE GREENBACK

My mate just got back from a 4 week hire car tour of the US, mainly in the southern areas. He paid about $1.40 US for one of their gallons so that works out to about a quarter of our price here.

$1.40 divided by 4.55 litres=$.31 cpl rounded up.

aussie dollar is buying 90 cents

our fuel $1.61 cpl

so cost of 4.55 l @$1.619=$7.36645

so we are paying like almost $10 a US gallon!!!! when all of the above fators are taken in together.
Also can somebody please check my figures to see if they are correct and if they are we are being F&^KED OVER BY THE GOVERNMENT AND FUEL COMPANIES!!!!

and we are suppose to have one of the cheapest fuels around???

I think not.

Angler, i don't know where my work mates brother is from but wioll find out and get back to you about it, i think he might be in the northern area's of the state but will confirm.

The tables haven't turned because the US dollar isn't worth US$1 to 50 Australian cents. The Australian dollar doesn't come up in the news in the US, only Japanese Yen, Euros and British pounds.

US gallon = 3.785411784 litres

The CURRENT price for gasoline (fuel/petrol) in good 'ol Georgia (Atlanta) is around $US3.30 per gallon US Fuel Watch

$US3.30 per gallon (3.785411784 litres) means cost is about 87.176 (US) c/pl.
Australian $ is CURRENTLY buying about US0.95 therefore equivilant cost p/l in $AU is approx. 0.911568 cents

The cost of a US gallon based on our price per litre at about $1.65 c/pl would be 3.785411784 X $1.65 = $6.24

Of course we/I don't know for sure how much excise they currently pay however in 2007 Govt. excise and taxes Federal excise taxes were 18.4 cents per gallon and State excise taxes averaged 21.5 cents per gallon. In the US from 2000 to 2007, taxes averaged about 24% of the retail gasoline price. This when converted into litres is equivilant to about $US 0. 2184 c/pl or $AU0.23 c/pl. Additional county and city taxes can have a significant impact on the price of gasoline in some locations.

We (OZ) pay about 0.52 c/pl in Govt 'charges' which is about 31% of the cost per litre

So as you can see, not only is fuel/gas/petroleum cheaper in the good 'ol USofA but the percentage of excise/tax they pay is even lower than we are currently paying. In some circles it is suggested that USA pays a lot lower delivery/cartage costs the we do in Australia. That could account for some of the price differences.

The most recent comparison of fuel prices throughout the 'developed/industrial' world placed Australia at about 4th lowest.

I think your sadly mistaken
yes the price may be linked to the US$ but we buy petrol according to the value of oil in $US

$US dollar goes up = cheaper oil in $US
but then the exchange rate keeps it the same price for us

Currently the only reason were not paying over $2.00 a litre for fuel is because of the low USD and favourable exhange rate.
If it was sitting at the more tradional 75c wed be over $2.00 per litre

Spot on Buddy..Imagine if it was even around 74 cents like a coupla years back...

Although with the U.S in Recession and people cutting back the fuel will settle back a bit in the later part of the year !

True....however one of the reasons why the price of oil is high is because of a weak US dollar. Those who pump it out of the ground are piaid in US dollar, when they convert back to there own currencies (Saudia Arabia etc) they get less local currency. One way to compensate is to receive more US dollars per barrel.

Heard on ABC1 tv today that a new Diesel refinery is to open in India in September/October this year, and it's expected to be able to reduce the reliance on existing refineries and will lower the price of diesel.

Your words: "it's expected to be able to reduce the reliance on existing refineries and will lower the price of diesel".

Don't hold your breath mate, it could be like waiting for Qld to win a State of Origin, or for Harold Holt to turn off the porch light!!!!! LOL

lets just hope it might happen one day, soon would be good.
Colin.
