Insurance on the track?

Last year we were away for 3 months and in that time we rented the home. In doing so I changed from Home Policy to Landlord Policy.
Now all worked out real good and when we got home I changed back to normal home policy.
HOWEVER! I now realise that the landlord policy did not cover our personal valuables jewelry laptop etc we had with us. We winged it, and were lucky.
I have contacted my insurance CGU and also RAA insurance asking if they will provide a policy that will cover personal items in this situation and both said NO.
They suggested that I contact an insurance broker who may have a larger range of products.
As we will be away for 5 months this year has anybody out there had any similar experience in this area?
Thanks
M.

The van is insured by RAA Insurance and they are not interested.
Thanks

Ah Insurance companies. I once had my car stolen and it had 3 sets of golf clubs in the back. Had the Car the House the Contents and my Life insurance all with the same company. They did not cover the clubs as they were not covered by car insurance, they were not covered by contents, cause they were in the car. Go figure!! Needless to say Im not with that company any longer!!

Do the people that you are renting out to have their own contents and insurance? You could offer to pay the difference in premiums to the tenants to cover your contents? You could always say you were only away for a week (if there was a claim) and the people were house sitting! All sneaky solutions, but ways around the insurance companies (I used to work for one). Do you have a formal lease arrangement? Obviously, to leave your contents, there is an element of trust involved. All questions that would need to be answered before a solution could be formulated.
Good luck with your travels, see you there!

Thanks for your input.
I don't have any real worries about the stuff left behind as the Land lord policy should cover that, the problem I have is how can I cover the personal items such as jewelry, camera, laptop etc which will be in the caravan , car or on us.

Do your tenants have their own insurance? Can you offer to pay the diff in premiums to cover your stuff? If no, you can say (if a claim is made) you were only away for a week! Sneaky stuff but maybe what is required (I used to work for an insurance co.) Do you have a lease agreement? With your contents still at home an obvious amount of trust is presumed toward the tenants. Otherwise you are facing moving your belongings out! Things to ponder!
Happy travels, see you there!

Had a contents insurance years ago thta covered all of the goodies you are concerned about. it was an extension to my home contents cover. Give AMP a call. No guarantees. Worth a shot. Cheers
