I have the same problem as many other 60 series owners, with noisy spring packs on the front of my 1989 cruiser. I HAVE read the other forums on this topic, as it is how I got my apprentice to turn the wheel full lock one way and then the other to discover- you guessed it, the spring pack twists the shackles in full lock and grabs the bottom of the shackle (greasable) with the first wrap of the leaf as it does so. What the other forums have not satisfactorily answered for me is, Why, when the whole suspension set up is only two years old, does it do this when the original one which was 12 years old did not? And why does lubricating it make it worse(or I am told it does) I am too afraid to try it. Finally is there likely to be any long term damage or just keep on cruising with it?

Im not a professional here, but lets look at whats changed.
Springs have been changed, probably more leafs, higher ride height, noelathane bushes, greasable shackles...
One, or all or a combination have caused this clunk, it did it on my OME 88 model 60, and i worried sick till i was told to turn the radio up, as it would not be a problem by a mechanic.
I used to paint them with old diesel oil to keep them nice and lubed.

Andi I think you'll find that many other 60 series owners have the same problem. I can think of two solutions - either turn the radio up or go for an 80 or 100 series.

ROFL- well as I am self employed I guess its time to crank up Metallica on my drives as I wouldnot own a 80 series in a pink fit & 100 are still too expensive. Troopy is the go for me from now on. Thanks for the input though.

The original Toyota springs had nylon bushes between the leaves to allow them to slide easier, when I've put extra leaves in in the past I've just greased between the leaves with moly grease which seems to do the same job. It just requires greasing occasionally.
the twisting can be minimised by tightening the spring clamps up and peening the rivet heads a bit to stop them moving.
The clunk will never go away, just have to live with it unfortunately.
