Hi

97 Troopy transfer case

Anyone know the maximum allowable wear on the transfer rear output shaft
where the high/low hub sleeve sits, I held the output shaft in a lathe with the hub sleeve engaged on the high gear and a dial indicator setup on the gear tooth,
I'm getting about 35 thou total movement, The low gear is about the same, most
wear is on output shaft, the hub sleeve and gear don't look too bad.

Phil

I guess any sign of movement relates to wear.

Ring this bloke; Mick 02 62804324. He is a gearbox and diff teco.

Hi Phil, according to the Toyota Workshop manual the maximum clearance between the inside diameter of the high & low range gears & the mating surfaces on the rear output shaft is 0.035mm to 0.081mm which is approximately 3 thou, so if you're getting 35 thou movement it looks like you're up for a shaft. That's excessive for one of those dirt boxes. Given their history of high wearing shafts, don't stuff around, replace the lot and be done with it. Mating a new high/low gear with a crook shaft will only led to rapid wear on the new parts, ie a bodgey rebuild. Toyota motoring was never meant to be cheap!

Ah yes but reliable dirt box, some of these other plastic fantastic velour
carpeted things don't get far out of the show room before the owners
are standing at the service desk with the new toy dripping goo outside
the workshop.
