Ray's outdoors are flogging 40 L Engels in
Adelaide for $875 (limit 1 per customer - never to be repeated etc - the usual bumpf) - is this a really good price ? - compared to the larger turnover eastern states ?
Also, Engel say they now have as low a current draw (apples for apples) as any fridge on the market. Does this all mean that Engel might be THE buy ?Gotta have red sand on those boots !

If you put in a smaller compressor, it may draw less. May run longer, tho.
On a recent trip, in temps of the high 30's, a friend's 40L engel was running 12 mins on, 4 mins off.
My Autofridge (Danfoss compressor) was running 20 mins on, 40 mins off.

But the Autofridge draws more when running.

Yeh, but the simple maths shows that the Autofridge uses 1.5A/H avg (20/60 x 4.5A), compared with 2.1A/H avg (12/16 x 2.8A) for the Engel under the same conditions.

I don't recon you could go wrong with that price....
I've got 2 Engels, 1 as a fridge, the other as a frezzer.
They are just great and I would do it again (Buy Engels that is) if I had to.
I paid a lot more than that though!!

That seems a prety good price mixo, I paid a grand for my 21l engel 4 years ago.
I think they are much of a muchness, I have an old engel, a new engel and a new BIG waeco.
I only bought the waeco cos I reckon their good value for money ($1300 for 110l)
My old engel is 28 years old and copped a real hiding and never let me down.
My new one has been in daily use for 4 years with no drama.

I recently bought an Evakool RF 47DT (dual temperature - 47Litre with separate fridge and freezer sections. Brilliant!), including the 240 volt power pack, for $870 complete. The normal price would have been $1129 but by getting together with a mate we arranged a deal for TWO instead of just one.
Obviously you can have more bargaining power if you can buy more than one. I still had to
shop around a bit though.
Might be a clue for others.

yep its amazing that they stick together Australia wide and keep the prices up on these fridges but if you can create some bargaining power the dealers seem to have enough margin to do the deal.Last week at the
Melbourne boat show the deal was a cf-50waeco fridge a 240volt ac adaptor and an eight can waeco cooly fridge(heats and cools)on 12 volts for$999.It's the best deal i've seen in 18months so was very tempted.I believe the waeco is a very good fridge for the money but my first choice is the evakool because of its excellent insulation. To
bridge the gap between these two fridges i asked him to throw in an insulated cover to make the sale.He said it couldn,t be done as the covers cost $145 and he had the deal on as a sale price.i told him i was dealing in the folding stuff and he asked me to take a
seat whilst he got my new fridges together with cover.BTW the little cooly fridge is great as it chills down the cans
well and ensures that they are cold and waiting at the end of the day. mark

Mixo,
$875 is about $225 cheaper than anywhere else, although I noticed Snowys is selling them for $999 cash. I went into Rays and had difficulty walking past the Engels - ended up getting one. Figured I could either keep my 12 year old Engel as a second fridge or sell it later. I like the new Engel. BTW, they are also selling the Waecos at a bargain price too.
I'd doubt that they would ship them interstate. Rays are new to
Adelaide and want some local custom.

BTW ? What is this Phil .....? Also, it appeas that all Engels are simply one compartment - you have fridge or a freezer mode, but not both at the same time .... is this the case ?Gotta have red sand on those boots !

Yes - 1 compartment like most fridges. The engels have a dial that varies the temp from fridge to freeze. Some of the bigger Waecos ahve multiple compartments now.
I don't understand why anyone would run it as a freezer when camping. If you want meat to last, then cryovac it and it will last several months in a fridge.

Engel is the go. Drawers no more than 2.8amp even when cutting in. Danfoss compressors are
well made but not designed for portable use. You can run an engel in extreme temps., upside down, and over the most extreme corrugations and they keep running. Danfoss compressors, found in all the "other brands" are just your normal household type compressor working in extreme conditions.
Engel may not cool as good as some in 50 degree heat, and they may not have 5 year warranty like Waeco. But let me tell you, you will be needing the 5 year warranty from Waeco!
The other main point to mention is that Wasco replacement parts are very few. If you crack the outside case - you need to buy a new fridge to replace the part. Engel have next day distributors Aus. wide. PLUS.....KEEP THE DOLLAR IN AUS!!

Assume you have tongue-in-cheek re running Engels upside down. Actually, it's about 30deg tilt, about the same as the Danfoss.
The 12/24v Danfoss is not the same as a domestic compressor, but is purpose-designed and will take the rough stuff.
If you
check the label, you'll find Engel is made in Japan. Danfoss compressors are represented in each state.

True. Engel is Japanese made, but the compressor is specifically made for the Engel fridge, and only the Engel fridge. It is not UNIVERSAL like the Danfoss and found in every other fridge on the market.......evakool, bushman, etc. Besides, all Waeco's are assembled in China except the CF range. Oh, and you can run an Engel at any angle. (not that you would really need to unless you were in REAL trouble!!!)

Engel is now made in Thailand. Quality still looks good - the finish on my new one looks better than my old one.
I think all the Japanese 4wd utes (Hilux. Triton etc) come out of Thailand now as
well!

BPL, sorry, I think you are wrong on both counts. I bought a 40 litre engel two weeks ago - it clearly states on the box "designed by Sawafuli Electric Co Japan; Made in Thailand".
As for the utes, do a search on Google with the keywords Hilux and Thailand and you will find an article from the Age that states
"Such an agreement would allow Australia to export Camrys to Thailand while maintaining its import of HiLux commercial vehicles from Thailand."

Righto. Vegemite is made in Thailand, meat pies are made in Thailand, Holdens are made in Thailand, etc. etc. You are right - I am wrong.
