white smoke

I have a 42TD GU which blows white smoke for a short time on really cold mornings. The next morning when it is a few degrees warmer its fine - no smoke at all. Took it to the diesel bloke and he checked the glow plugs and they were fine. It is his opinion that if it was the injectors it would be doing it all the time. Any ideas? Cheers Phil

White smoke can be as simple as condensation produced because overnight , cold damp air forms in the exhaust, as the air gets colder it becomes more dense and has a greater content of oxygen. If you dont feel that this has anything to do with it then another cause of this can be incorrectly timed injectorpump (see recent 4wd monthly). May try having your pump timed with a dial gauge by some one it is usually $80 well spent as it gives peace of mind and gets your beast running at its optimum. Theres a couple to start with, I'm sure there will be others with some valued imput, I hope this could be of assistance to you.

Hi
You have a problem with a glow plug or two, or an injecter, or both. White smoke is unburnt diesel. Does the motor miss whilst running and making white smoke? The third option is blocked air filter,.. but as i said, more like a glow plug out. If you dont change them all, they will all go at once and you will be on shanks's pony when you mostr probably need to be elsewhere most:-)

Hi
Black smoke designates rich conditions, but it is all burnt... when it doesnt burn, or when the oxygen content is low from inlet filter being blocked, you get white smoke.Either way its unburnt fuel.
If you have a great deal of black smoke, it can most likely be injector spray pattern, but also can be rich mixture from pump overfuelling. f you have a turbo, it is common to turn up the fuel for max fuel setting, but when the turbo is off boost, and you give the motor max fuel, it results in black smoke.
Question is does the motor feel under powered and is it using more than usual l/km??

There isnt a great deal of smoke usually and for its age ('98 GU 2.8TD with 270,000klms) i guess it would be considered good.

Motor doesnt seem underpowered any more than normal (2.8 certainly isnt a world beater) and economy is around 13L/100km. (But this is with 3/4 length steel rack.)

Sounds pretty normal to me for an indirect injection diesel on a cold morning, so long as it runs normal after 20 or 30 sec's I would not worry.

Phil, I had exactly the same problem u describe in my GU TD42.
Mechanic adjusted the timing on fuel pump - no more smoke.

I concure with Stevo , same prob , went to United Fuel Injection in Perth , thay checked glow plugs , all fine , then timing . It had been retared back to 4.5 for some reason . Nissan specks thay told me were 7.5 , had them set it to 7.0 and prob solved . Now starts better , runs better and no white smoke ( re unburnt fuel ) .Why go overseas when you can ExplorOz
