There's still things to find out there....
From ABC Website:
A
Darwin based academic is confident he has found a
campsite of the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt in
Kakadu National Park.
Charles
Darwin University researcher, Dan Baschiera says he thinks he has found the markings of the famous explorer on a tree in
Kakadu.
Mr Baschiera says the tree is on the escarpment near
Jim Jim Falls and carries the blaze of Mr Leichhardt.
He says he believes it was Leichhardt's last
camp on his successful expedition through Queensland and the Northern Territory in 1845.
"I'm pretty sure. It's in exactly the coordinates that he had on his map. We went looking and came across a tree with a very ancient old blaze on it," he said.
The theory has not yet been confirmed and Mr Baschiera says it will be hard to find conclusive evidence.
"It's going to be difficult. Certainly the blaze looks very geometric and associated with the two L's that Leichhardt would blaze with a small tomahawk, which is what he was using at the time.
"The possibility of fully confirming it may actually still remain questionable."

If only they could find his LAST
camp on his last trip, one more mystery could be solved.

Interesting, I received an email during the week from what I presumed was a support crew member for Bernd Marx who has apparently arrived in Australia to cycle part of Leighhard's route in FNQ and across to the NT. He hopes to visit the approx grave of Gilbert on Dunbar station. Bernd has apparently set up the world's first and only Leichhardt Museum at Trebatsch in southern Germany.

He sounds pretty keen, 4Wdrive sounds an easier option....
We are pretty lucky here, having a
young (european) history, with almost all the exploration
well documented.
