A group of us are planning a trip from
Wyndham to Cocklebiddy in the middle of the year. The
Eagle Highway from
Windy Corner to the
Gunbarrel Highway seems to be mystery section. Does anyone have any recent experience of that section? We would be very grateful for any comments about the road condition, accessibility etc.

Yep, an easy run. Was there in 2006. Roads/tracks don't vary much over the years. Might be a few washouts here and there.
Don't forget to drive into the
Warri Site and also on to the Karrinarri Claypan where the last of the nomad aborigines were found in 1977. The is a
plaque there and also a bottle where travellers put their own notes in. This is also where some cross country travellers take off for the Calvert Ranges. No tracks though.
Cheers

Cheers Mick.

Sorry, in my haste I've given you the
blogs for The Talawana from Windy to Gary.
The Eagle is covered as far as Eagle Hussar
bore and the cut line in this years trip.
Try Here.

FJB,
The
Eagle Highway does not go to
Windy Corner.
The
Eagle Highway cuts the Gary Highway about 90kms south of the corner. This rarely driven 66 km section of the Eagle I drove in 2007. It is very overgrown and most of the time it was easier to drive slightly off the track. I have a very short video of it. I have also put the plot in the plotswap section of this site.
Once you get to the area of Dragon 1
Well you should be Ok. An extract of my blog
Western Desert Meanderings 2007 says "The
Eagle Highway had no signs of recent tracks. Some sections were completely overgrown and it would be easier to drive adjacent to the track. I saw 5 bush turkeys in this 66km rarely travelled section. At the next intersection I had to spend some time
clearing vegetation from around the ute."
A less tough option would be to take the unnamed track that passes by the Connolly Basin Crater. This track is about 45 km west of
Windy Corner on the Talawana Track. I travelled the 5-6 kms to the centre of
the crater and the track was Ok. This track will take you also to near Dragon 1
Well. The rest of the
Eagle Highway is pretty easy.
Cheers
Alan

Thanks Alan
I was a bit rough in my description. The intention was to go south from the point 45 km west of
Windy Corner to Eagle Dragoon
airstrip and then continue south on the
Eagle Highway. It sounds like that is the go.
Thanks
Jack
