I,ve always felt the old girl [.89 gq]was running a bit hot, specially with the air con on a hot day.So took it to the radiator mob , & they found the thermo. had been replaced with a ''generic''[$25 cheaper] one The opening & closeing temps. were the same, But the actual opening was visibly smaller on the el cheapo. It has made a difference on the temp. gauge ,no longer goin over half on a hot day with the aircon goin ,so I,m happy! Yes I hear you say ,I AM mechcanically challenged! Have a good & safe w/end out there.....

Mechanically challenged? So who of us ain't?
Good onya for making the point.
Shan't go into detail, but a dear friend of mind, (ex farmer, miner, teacher), spent a Mint on an overheating Tojo , to the point that a replacement engine was dropped in.......
(So some kid picked up a re-engined Troopy for around $7000. Cleaned the grass from the radiator, and Bob's yer uncle).
Onya Phil: you dun ok.

Yes Phil, I have done a heap to help my GU with same running hot symptoms and quite a few people have told me the same about the generic brand thermo's compared to the Nissan ones. There is a Nissan one that opens at a lower temp for the GU's (turbo 4.2 anyway) which Nissan has dropped in for me and a higher temp a/c cut-out switch in the radiator so at least I have a/c most of the time now.
I have learned to accept on hot days
mine will run high on the temp gauge but still not let me down. It has been running seriously hot temps for it's entire life and now with 370 odd thou on the dial I reckon it does them no harm.
Cheers from one mechanically challenged to another. (Hehehe)
Trevor.

Phil. Having lived in the Tropics for quite a long time we solve the thermostat problem on my older cars by removing its center. Keep & put back in the original and just remove the faulty center pieces. Do not have to worry about cold starts up here and never have to worry about the thermostat playing up. When I lived in
Perth it also was not a problem, so maybe most
places in Australia, unless you live in the snow, they are not really needed. Cheers Tony
