HI again

Going to look at an 80 seris multivalve turbo Monday and am not sure about what we should check out????

Is there any specific checks that should be done?

Is it necisary to get it profesionaly looked over? Or if it goes / drives well then should be fine?

Compression tests??? Difficult with the turbo? Necisary?

Central diff, how do you tell if they are ok??????

Any other things???
This is a big step for us and we do need to get it right due to limited finances.

Kind Regards
GN

Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee cooooooooooooool change at last. (well only 37C atleast)

80 series multivalve turbo

Diesel or Petrol?

Factory Turbo or After Market Kit?

What year 80 series?

How many KM's?

I'd have your RACV give it the once over definitely - probably money well spent!

I know when I went and bought my 92 80 series 1HD-T turbo - everyone reckoned I paid too much and truthfully it needed a little work in that the exhuast had a leak which made it sound a lot louder than it should, BUT I NEEDED that configuration for what I wanted to do and they are damn hard to find.

Luckily theres been nothing seriously wrong with it.

Even now - i would love someone whos an "expert" to go over it with a fine tooth comb and find out everything that "needs doing now or in the immediate future" -just to keep on top of the maintenance, so it doesn't build up into an insurmountable list!

There are a few "well known" problems with some years and models.

If yours in the later post 1996? 80 series T diesel with the 24 valves (1HD-TE) engines - these had a onboard computer and maybe you can take a laptop with the right OBD11 compliant software and connector, and diagnose the engine while it is running for an indication of what may or may not be wrong with it!

IMHO - maybe a full on report from a Toyota dealer might even be worth the spend - because they can probably "cost estimate" - the required work for you - and you MIGHT be able to use that info as a "bargaining chip" to drive down the price a little if it is a private seller.

Things like replacing the rubber timing belt every 100,000 km's are crucial if it is an "interference engine" (piston crowns and valves share the same space inside the cylinder at different times) - because if the belt breaks and they share the same space at the same time - somethings gotta give and that gets expensive fast!

Best of luck!

Cheers

Yup,

The 1997 1HD-TE engine was 24 valve (our old 1HD-T from 1992 is the 12 valve model).

Your 1997 1HD-TE has a computer to control the injection - have been looking for such an engine for a while to replace our 1HD-T so we can pug a chip into the computer to get more HP from it!

The 1997 were a pretty good vehicle - Toyota had enough goes to have got most of the bugs out!

If it is a manual I'd be very surprised if you get it for much under 30k?...and at that I'd still reckon it's probably a good buy!

Best of luck with it - hopefully the RAC report will cover all the major areas!

I'm envious! ;o)

Was thinking to try and buy such a vehicle ourselves - swap ALl the additions from our 92 onto one - and then flog the 92 model - so we get the modern engine!

My "Ultimate" vehicle I reckon....

'97 or '98 x 80 series 24 valve Factory T Diesel Sahara model with low KM;'s (<250k),

add on:-

K & N twin rear wheel carrier
Long Ranger 147 liter diesel sub tank
Lifted springs and shocks
Diesel Gas Aust LPG conversion and 116 liter tank in the back between wheel arches - remove rear seats.
Rock sliders - steel - chromed!
Winch Bar and Brush Guards (Steel Chromed)
Hella Rallye Spots
3 Inch Madrel bent stainless exhaust
Safari Snorkel
Safari Air to Air Intercooler
IPod compatible Sound system
Computer Chip
Car Bandit GPS Tracking Alarm
Sat Phone
VHF (Marine) Radio
HF Flying Doc Radio
Fire Extinguisher
243 mhtz Epirb
G3 Mobile Phone & Hands Free kit
Sat Nav system
Waeco / Engel Fridge system
Twin battery setup
Vac Air Brakes PBR
Haman Reece WD Tow Hitch
Roof Rack
Winch in a cradle wired to use front or back!
All the usual recovery gear
On Board Compressed Air and Tank - Plumb3ed front and rear!
On Board Poly Water Tank
Gauges for oil temp EGT & TBoost!

That'll do for starters!

Most of thats already on the 92 series - but a "newer" 97/98 model to swap it all over too, wouldn't go astray so we get the computer chippable engine would be really nice!!

A guy can always dream huh!

Cheers

Hi GN,
The 95-97 80 series had the 1HD-FT mechanically injected multi-valve turbo-diesel.
The 100 series came out with the 1HD-FTE, which has an electronically controlled injection pump.
Contrary to what Flywest has said, none of the 80 series turbo-diesels are "chippable".

I have a 97 multivalve and it's the ducks nuts! The best of all the 80 series IMHO. Add a 3" exhaust and they get up and move.

If your not sure what to look at, get it inspected by a competant person. Don't be scared off by high Km's either.Mine had over 270k on the clock when i bought it but had a solid service history with Toyota.Check out Offroad80's for all your 80 series-related info.
