I put this to David that through this site we "pass the hat around" for the victims of the latest fires.

David,if you are reading this thread we ask if we can use your postal address to donate so as you guys would be able to pass the donations on to the relevant charities who will no doubt organise to help these poor buggers out?

we all need to try to help out the ones who will be without their homes 2nite,cheers.

Paypal would take around 5% of any deposit so possibly would be better to make a tax deductable donation at any bank.
Dig deep.

I have to agree with Mark because as individuals we can direct the funds to where we want them to go.
Red Cross know the job at hand, they take no commission from the funds.
I'm not sure David should be asked to, or be given the extra work involved with moving funds from various accounts to where ??

The thought is to be commended but ...

Just my own opinion :-))

Unfortunately Gippsland has a lot of history and experience with emergencies, and as a result has a long standing and extremely well regarded emergency relief organisation. I'd suggest this is the best way to provide support to the many Gippslanders affected by these fires.

http://relieffund.org.au/

"The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund is a registered charitable organization making all donations tax deductible. All donations are returned to the community and no costs are deducted.

The Fund provides relief and assistance to persons residing in the Gippsland Municipalities of Bass Coast, South Gippsland, Latrobe, Baw Baw, Wellington and East Gippsland who suffer injury, loss or damage from natural disasters.

Fire Appeal - 31st January 2009

The Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund has launched an appeal to aid fire stricken familles who received a devastating blow from this week’s fires across Gippsland.

The fund is currently urging Gippsland and Victorian communities and businesses to support those who have lost homes and belongings by making a much-needed donation."

Our house is covered in ash brought down by a few drops of rain - I was amazed at how thick the cloud of ash was, and we are at least 30km from the fire. I can't imagine what it must have been like for those directly in the path. My thoughts are with them.

Good idea Tim but there are several severe fires with some loss of lives and huge damage other than Gippsland, Bendigo, Kilmore, Kinglake, Redesdale, Beechworth and Horsham just to name some, there are probably others .

IMO donations to the General Appeal which has been set up today would beneficial to victims of all the Victorian fires.
84 confirmed dead as I write this.

It`s a sad day for all of us.

Mark,

Its a great sentiment, but I agree with those who suggest using existing agencies to donate to.

Perhaps the opportunity for a members gathering somewhere down the track if people think there is anything as a group that we could do to help in a practical way?

Cheers,

Matt.

Agree with you Matt.

Lets give through the systems already set up.

If later on (a couple of weeks or couple of months?), members down that way hear of people being missed by the system, which will happen, that follow up assistance is where ExplorOZ members could help. Make it more pointed to individuals that the system can't cope with.

Matt M,

Thats probably a better idea, give it a month or two, then find a park or town which is struggling due to the fires, mob in there, spend your $$, offer your time, etc.

I saw this article and wonder whether it is easier for all, including David, if we make donations direct. After all the money will probably find its way to those that need it urgently much quicker if done directly.

However it is done though....let's all help as best we can.

Mark, being in business myself, I'm very aware of the time constraints on busy business people!!

I personally would have picked up the telephone and *TALKED* ( yes, done some verbalising ) with David, it would have taken just a few minutes.

With that one phone call I would have an answer, the same answer your still waiting 8 days for, and the whole thing would NOW be set-up, or maybe even forgotten about.

But you've chosen to do it your way, it's your choice.

Now you have a gr8 week....

Mark,

EO is not a registered charity. There are complications in becoming one that would seem a waste of time when there are already better organised charities out there.

Good gesture on your part in suggesting it, but asking David to explore other avenues (non profitable) is a big ask.

I would suggest he has enough to do without re-creating something that already exists.

Cheers,

Jim.

Mark and others,

Whilst the idea is good there is no need for ExplorOz to collect these funds and pass money around. There are various overheads and fees on Paypal or credit cards etc and we do not want to be collecting cheques for mailing - this just does not make sense.

Please use one of the many already organised avenues to contribute such as Commonwealth bank, Red Cross etc.

Your "heroic" effort was 2 minutes of typing and trying to unload the responsibility of the hard work onto someone else.

You'll no doubt call me a "tool" again, I'll live happily with that.

My kindest Regards,

Jim.
