Hi,

Hoping someone can help me with some times to drive the following routes. You obviously can't base time to drive from the km's as I'm guessing it can be kinda slow going at times. So if anyone with knowledge of the routes below could help out that would be appreciated. I am not towing.

1. Arthur River to Queenstown via Corinna.
2. Queenstown to Cradle Valley.
3. Queenstown to Hobart.
4. Hobart to Strathgordon.
5. Hobart to Southport.

Cheers,
Paul.

First stop would be google maps.....

As an example your first request comes up as 193km & 2hrs 46minutes.

Whilst the times are usually conservative, they would be a fairly good guide if your not uintending or not able to sit right on the speed limit.

Cheers

Thanks Stormy....I've already calculated the times off Mapsource however not sure that it nor Google will be that accurate given the type of terrain it's through so was just hoping to get some advice from people that have actually driven it.

Thanks.

The roads in Tassie are mostly good condition, I therefore find the times in mapsource are pretty close to the mark.

Just a word of caution about Tassie drivers though, THEY LIKE THE WHOLE ROAD on bends. I have never seen such abandon on blind corners as I do when in Tassie. Some of them are just mad.

Tassie Devils can also be relied upon to give you a thrill when driving at night.

Travel times in Tasmania are IMHO not an issue as you can travel across the island in 2-3 hours if you rush, but who wants to rush when there is sooooo much to see & do?????

Have to agree with Colin about the drivers here. Some of them are just retarded. Usually they overtake on double lines or just before a crest or around a tight bend. But when they have a kilometer of straight, clear road they'll just sit on your @r$e. And not to mention a whole lot of other crazy things. Just scary stuff. I thought Japanese drivers were bad.

Cheers.

Hi Paul..
No 1 = 193 km – about 2 hours 46 mins
No 2 = 110 km – about 1 hour 27 mins
No 3 = 249 km – about 3 hours 21 mins
No4 = 155 km – about 2 hours 21 mins
No5 =97.1 km – about 1 hour 24 mins...
These are off google maps..times may vary slightly but will be close. If you are a steady driver, add a half hour to the long drives.
Pit stops etc...Good luck..have a good time...If coming later in the year, there may be snow about,,, be really careful...

No1 = gravel roads and a bit windy but not too bad.
No2 = all black top pretty good road.
No3 = very windy , 99 corners just to get out of Queenie to top of hill. all black top..
No4 = all black top. fairly good road.
No5 = all black top, good road..
I have lived on the west coast for a number of years,, so my idea of a good road may vary a fair bit to yours...
good luck. Don't try to hurry, roads are tricky....

A lot bloody longer than you think. Most of those roads are very twisty and slow, but in general in good condition. Add in a little rain and it takes even longer.
From personal experience (ex taswegian) take the times given and add 50%.

Depends what you want to do. Many of these can take days if you keep wanting to stop and see the sights. WA people can look at a Tassie map and think, yeah, whole island in about three days, and find after that time they've been 100 kms. Also to see a lot of features involves a walk which can take from half to 5 or more hours. A wonderful scenic state.

Tasmania = Queensland + Valium

Slow right down and enjoy the sights.

Otherwise, the times and suggestions above fit pretty well with my limited experience.

Oh, everything said about the local drivers is an under statement!

Remember that in Tassie there are no roads.
They have simply installed lots of corners, with a couple of very small straight bits.

Whatever time you decide is right for a journey in Tassie, firstly double it to allow for the corners, and then double it again because around nearly every corner is a photo opportunity, a lookout, or some other interesting thing.

Have fun.

Every long trip in Tassie is 3 hours. Every short trip is 45 mins. You won't go too far wrong with that.

The RACT map gives the following times

1. Not given
2. 2h35m
3. 4h00m
4. 2h45m
5. 1h30m

I would expect the map to be available from RACV.
Enjoy your time in Tas.

yep travel is pretty slow in tassie especially in a NA diesel, you can also leave 5th gear at home as you will rarely use it and make sure the brakes have plenty of meat on the pads as they will work overtime especially if towing.

To do justice to Tassie, you need 6 weeks. 2 will skim over the surface.

Hi Paul,

I hope that is not your intended itinerary! There will be a lot of un-necessary backtracking if that is the case.
I was amazed by the country through the Tarkine. It is an enormous shame about the bloke who lit a signal fire because hi car broke down and burnt out several thousand hectares of the Tarkine.
Just be sure to stop and sample the food and hospitality at the Corinna Tavern! I think many alleged professional food & bev trainers could learn a lot from the people there.

Enjoy the trip.

Lynds
