Insuring my trailer

Just wondering whether anyone has some ideas about insuring a trailer. I have a trailer for camping gear which takes the OzTent and all, so it's not a camper trailer. My vehicle insurer will allow $750 for the trailer if it comes to grief (!!) but will not insure the trailer separately.

The trailer itself is worth $10K and the equipment is probably another $7K so I would like to be responsible about this. Any suggestions happily received.

Cheers, Ros.

Hi, I reckon you can insure it as a trailer with extra's , like the van. with SGIC when I am a way I lodge a list of extra bits and they cover them by the month, actually the tent etc is covered under your home contents insurance, when we go away on a bush trip or interstate in just the 4x4 ,I insure the gps , gen set , tent , stove, camera ( up to $5.000) etc , and you can cancel it when you get back and they only charged me for 1 1/2 months pro rata, $7.00.
Cheers Des.

G'day Des. There's no doubt one needs to know a small amount to formulate the right questions. This was most helpful, and I might be reviewing my insurance overall.
Many thanks,
Ros.

Ros,

Also got my camping & camera gear, phone and gps insured with my Home & Contents insurer Allianz under the personal property section. Most of the gear is always in the vehicle and separately specified.
The camper trailer is insured with CIL but not sure if they will do a trailer but worth checking. It has to be locked for theft/burglary cover of the contents.

Hello Richard,
The trailer is completely steel construction and made to my specs. It has electric brakes, leaf suspension, and 17" wheels, and it certainly locks up securely. I had a look at CIL on the web and they might consider it as either a horse float or a campervan. It's certainly more secure than the type of camper that just folds down under a tarp.
Thanks for your thoughts - very helpful.
Ros.

My Trailer ( now converted to Camper ) is insured through RACV ..
$15.00 a month for replacement cost of $9,000.00 ...
Its probably a bit lower because all my insurances are with them - House car house contents , camera s etc..

Cheers

Thanks Mandrake,
I'll check this one as I have house and contents insurance with RACV. They haven't always impressed me with car insurance costs and service but that might have changed in more recent years. Might be time for a review.
Thanks again, Ros.
