Hi all,
I am fitting up an Endless Air compressor to my 80 series 1hz. Before I start cutting into things I was wondering if anyone has fitted one of these compressors and if they had any charging problems. It seems the fan belts will only be in contact with less than a 1/4 of the circumference of the alternator pulley and as I do a lot of night driving I am not sure the belts will not slip under the load of the Driving lights ect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Spook,
I would fell safer with at least 1/3 pulley of 'belt wrap' on the alternator.
What do you have to do to fit this 'used A/C compressor'?
Does this come as a kit to suit this engine or do you have to jerry build a mount bracket?
Will the same belt/s run the alternator...reducing reliability?
What's wrong with a quality portable 12v unit, probably cost about the same & you will still have it when you sell the vehicle.

hi oldfart1953, I purchased the whole kit from endless air, all the hard work is done that way. Reco'ed compressor.
I wanted more air than the 12v can supply as we do a lot of sand work and also use the toyota as a work break down unit.

Yes ,well.. you will need to fit smaller belts than endless say.
On mine they were just too loose, slipping as soon as heat starts.
But the issue with smaller belts is getting them on,bloody hands
scratches etc,The Toyo adjustment is really inadaquate for accs added on such as this endless setup.
I fit one belt at a day , drove around till it stretched enough to flip it
to the next pulley,You`ll find out what I mean as you do it.
Cut the water pipe short from motor is ok,as are hose coupling,
has given no problems.Just those belts.
Hope this helps.

Hi John, thanks for the reply.
I have noticed the belts seem very tight when I started to fit them so John at endless air may have changed the belt sizes already.
I was not concerned about cutting and joining the radiator hoses although they did seem very close to the AC pulley.
My biggest concern was the limited amount of belt on the alternator pulley, I do not know if the belts will hold or start to slip under load.
Have you noticed any slipping with yours?
Was your bottom radiator hose very close to the endless air pulley?
There must be a lot of these fitted up so may be I am just being paranoid.
Apart form the alternator pulley issue the kit seems exelent and well worth the extra money to not try and fit it myself.

I`ll have to look at the belt number I have now,but I went maybe
2 sizes smaller than they gave me-after having slip problems.
The unit runs well , just check the side bracket mount bolts on
rough roads as mine came a bit loose & caused some rattle.
Extra spring washer did the trick on left side.
Yes the hose is close to the pulley & frame , put armalex pipe insulation on frame area.

Thanks again John W.
I was going to use loktight on all the bolts as I thought this may be a problem.
I will also put something around the bottom radiator hose.
Have you had any issues with the alternator, eg slipping under load? How much belt do you have on your alternator pulley?
Do you have the 7.5 or 8CFM compressor? I will be using the 7.5CFM.
Sorry about all the questions but my main concern as there does not seem to be enough belt on the pulley to take a big load, apart from this every thing seems good.
Again thanks for your reply.

Belts 11A1180 , they are the only ones I have tried that stay tight
all the larger sizes cause slip , but 11A`s are pricks to get on.
7.5 CFM cause it looks like any larger won`t really fit too well.
Alternator doesn`t slip under load with larger belts , just slips all the time as soon as the motor heats up & if your north it is quick.

Not sure about locktite on threads , if you need to drop your sump for any reason , it may make it a little difficult .

Thanks John W.
I will try and get some 11A1180 belts later today and see if they look any better.

Hi Spook
I'm just interested where this compressor fits on the engine. Does the vehicle have air conditioning, as the standard a/c compressor sits above the alternator and has its own belt.
As an 80 series 1hz owner I'm just curious.
Regards Jon

Hi Happytravelers,
Yes we do have AC, the air compressor mounts below the alternator and runs off the same belts,(longer ones supplied), it is a bit tight but all seems to fit in neatly.
John from endless air is away this weekend so I can not contact him until Monday, I was hoping to put my mind at ease before then.
Cheers

Spook,

I had a similar problem with the air con compressor which is down the bottom righthand side on my 1FZFE 4.5lt petrol. I mounted a compressor (for air) up the top righthand side and used one drive belt and the belt ran only 1/4 of the circumference of the air conditioning unit pulley. It all ran fine until one stinking hot day on a long bush run the problem of the belt slipping reared its head. I solved the problem by installing an Idler pully on the outside of the belt to push it up so it had at least 1/3 of the circumference of the aircon unit pulley. This was about 8 years ago now and I haven't had the problem since.

Thanks Rod W
I will fit it all up and see how it works. I had not thought of an idler pulley, that gives me a lot more confidence in the project.
Cheers
