As usual with these type of articles the data used is of a limited nature.
What they leave out is all the natural resources and energy required to produce and deliver a new vehicle as opposed to the fact that "debt" has already been paid on the older vehicle.
It would be really nice to see the full environmental picture in these kinds of analysis.
ie. The amount of air pollution produced, raw materials and energy consumed by keeping a car say 12 years versus replacing it 3 times at 4 yearly intervals!
But hey, that may slew the result toward accuracy and we can't have that!
