centre bearing temp

G'Day all,
finally found the screaching on my navara, was the centre bearing on the prop shaft stuffed.
I pulled the shaft n took in to local wshop and got them to supply n fit new bearing, n i put back on vehicle.
When I lined it up I actually had to push the bearing forwards against the play of the rubber to line up holes in hangar.
Just took for run, seems ok but hint of vibration, but crawled under n felt bearing after about 5km, and its running quite hot.
is this normal for a centre bearing to run hot?
I'm not sure i never felt it before, maybe they all just run a bit hot by nature??
I'm wondering if they put the bearing on the wrong way round so now its flexing excessively on shaft.
Anyone advise?

Hi Ron
I would say you have your uni yokes misaligned there should be 2 arrows to line up on the slpines when you put back together .
If you haven't got yokes aligned will cause vibration & things to heat up.

young bloke blew two new centre bearings before we figured out the problem.......the front universal was binding a little and once this was change everything was fine....that bearing is still going strong some 8 years later. The vehicle was also lifted about 3 inches by the previous owner and this put some stress on the bearing as
well. To fix this I machined a 6 mm spacer to go between the rear diff and the propellor shaft and this put everything back into its right place.

As you had to force the rubber carrier to line up the mounting holes, I would be checking that it has been installed the correct way around. I actually made this mistake once when installing a centre bearing and it caused a vibration.

G'Day All,
Further to replies, I decided, at the thought of the bill I may struggle to pay, to restrip it all n rebuild.
With a good mate present with knowledge we took it all apart n rebuilt it ourselves.
Firstly we noticed the first knuckle on the uni was slightly outta line from the gearbox end, so we aligned them.
Then we re-tapped the pretty poor centre bearing holding brackets from some unknown out to M10, fitted spring washers above and nuts n spring washers below, overkill I know but it aint comin off!
Next the only thing we did different was align and bolt down the centre bearing before joining the tailshaft.
previously I joined the tailshaft then bolted centre bearing.
This way I think it all aligned better but still had about 4mm gap to be taken up by the rubber centre bearing, but this was done no problem and it took up nicely, mate said that the bearing housing being rubber will adapt to the shape within a few hrs, and if undone later there would be no gap.
A subsequent road test revealed no vibration even if revving to redline.
When we got back bearing felt hot TO ME, but my bushy mechanic told me it was 'cool' as, and he felt rear diff, which had never been touched n it was same temp.
He assured me I could drive 500km and it wouldnt get any hotter.
So all good n no exy visit to 4x4
shop again!
