Canning stock route

Hi All,Will be travelling the Canning Stock Route this year.Want some advice on fuel,will be driving a 70 series cruiser table top,fuel consumption when towing my 3 ton van is 5klm/lt., so i expect to use about the same amount of fuel.My question is should i have drum fuel brought in or fill up at well 33. I will be carrying 6 jerry cans plus the 2 tanks on the vehicle.Are the nights cold in August.
Does it make a difference which way you drive.I had thought of going south to north. Bill R

I think it's the same price either way so I'd fill at well 33. That way you cut out the labour of having to fill yourself from drums, you get a chance to stock up on any rudimentary supplies you may need and you won't suffer the indignity of having some less scrupulous traveller pinching your fuel (which does happen on a far to regular basis). I'm also presuming yoúr vehicle is diesel.

Mick,

Fuel from Capricorn Road House delivered to Well 23 is $2.50 p/l this year.

Last year fuel at Well 33 was $3.20 p/l and going up in price. That was in June last year. What the fuel might be this year is hard to say.

We are planning on going down the Canning from Billiluna about the end of June, then heading west from well 23. I'm tentatively planning to have 200 litres of empty capacity at well 23, so I'd be very reliant on a drum of Opal waiting for me there. We burn petrol, so little chance of borrowing from our diesel travelling companions!

Just how much risk is there of pilfering? My fallback position is to carry enough fuel to get back to well 33, but then with nothing pre-ordered I could still be out of luck.

If you are on the Canning heading south late June, I will be heading north about the same time. Leaving Wiluna 16th June

Fuel at Well 33 does not have to be pre ordered and in the past they have had petrol. In fact they are more likely to run out of diesel than petrol although they do have a "new" diesel storage tank.

Cotton Creek does not have petrol at all, only diesel. Cash only for the diesel and the price can be as high as $4.00 p/l. That was the price as of August last year.

I have not spoken to any one that has had fuel stolen from Well 23. A lot of hear say and rumor.
I do know that fuel has been taken from drums that have not been completely empty after being left in the empty drum section.
I also take a hand pump with me and do not rely on the pump that is at the fuel drop.

Mick your mention of fuel being nicked is the first time I have heard of anyone knocking off fuel from Well 23.

I did read about someone getting there and could not find their marked drum, a Sat call to the Capricorn Road House and they were allocated another drum from the stock as it seems they deliver excess drums to cover??

What have you heard about this occurring??

Thanks for your comments. I was aware of the lack of petrol at Cotton Ck. - bit of a trap for the unwary, like cash only and $4 per litre! Will carry a pump.

I reckon you would have first hand accounts of petrol theft if anyone has such accounts, so it's heartening to have your comments.

two recent incidents. Mate in Traralgon doing the trip south to north had 2/3rds of their drum knocked off. Fortunaty for them there were dregs in another few drums to get them by. Also spoke to people at Durba last year who'se fuel had been pilfered forcing them out to Cotton Creek.

The amount of fuel that you will be taking should be enough to get you to Well 33 from the south. You will have to top up at Well 33 to finish the trip.

Advising drivers on how much fuel to take can be very hard as it may vary with the amount of side trips, sand dune conditions and how the vehicle is driven.

On this site there is a lot of useful up to date information about the Canning and again this can only be a guide.

In August there would have been a lot of traffic over the Canning and this could make the fuel usage a bit more with the track and dunes being used.

Are the nights cold in August? Again it is a matter of what you think is cold and is it worth doing the trip if it is cold. I have experienced -5 on some mornings in June on the Canning but that will not stop me from doing the trip again.

I don't think that it would make that much difference which way you traveled. I have always gone south to north because it is easier to keep track of the Wells. Well 1a is in the south and Well 51 is north of the trip.

Hi Bill
Well to start with, you will be blown away by the canning, it changes after every sand dune and just becomes more beautiful. In saying that we have heard some horror stories about the V8 70 series on fuel consumption, especially when you put the boot into her, and believe me you are going to have to do that over some of the sand dunes. We only took 3 jerry cans along, emptied them when we got to well 33 and filled up at the community. Then went onto Rudall River N/P, back to Cotton Creek where we filled up again then to Wiluna and we did all the side tracks to Durba Springs and Calvert Range also using our 3 jerry cans and we had a 1/4 tank left when we got to Wiluna. So 6 jerry cans should be ok for you but you will work it out as you go along because the snad dunes are not always the same, if it gets hot during the day they can be deadly. It's all extra weight as well. We've got the Turbo Diesel 79 series with a canopy and it was 4 tonne when we left Halls Creek.

As far as being cold well we have lived in Darwin for the past 32 years and yes it did get a bit cold for us but we travelled with 4 couples from Victoria and they were fine.

As to which way you go, travelling south at least you won't have the sun in your eys in the late afternoon.

Have a great time on the CSR, you might see our friends they are leaving from here early August. 75 series with canopy.

Bill you still have a 79 series if its a TD V8 tray back??

The 70 Series term is one applied to the whole range of 70 series vehicles, IE the 76 Series 4 door V8 TD, the 78 Series V8 TD Troopy and the 79 Series TD V8 Tray.

Bill,

We travelled from 33 to Wiluna and had enough diesel to get to Meeka. 205 litres all up, with Calvert Range Detour.

15.3 litres per 100.

3 people and fully loaded.

Had no option for fuel drop last year as Capricorn was not delivering due to track not running.

Low pressures helped in the sand, but it was fairly firm most of the trip.

South the North....slightly longer dunes but a little easier then North to South (more steep....not my much though).

Cash only at Kuna...no EFTPOS.

Most food supplies out of date too....no point in buying there anyway.

Dont rush it as others did, and they had numerous problems. Have a good look around and take it easy.
