Anybody have any opinions on new model Prado v old model prado?

Only stuff that I can think of so far:

1. Different shape
2. New has less gound clearance
3. New has 180 litres v old 159 litres diesel tanks
4. New TD costs an arm and a leg. Old models can be picked up for less than 40k with low low kms.
5. New has lots of electronic stuff that has limited use?!
6. Em..that's all I know so far!

Give me some insight as I'm wondering which way to go and surely there must be more to it than above?

I have one of each. the 1998 is for sale. Don't know that there's much more electronic stuff. Remote central locking and auto up and down on all windows is all I can think of. The larger tanks are great and combined with changing to diesel my range is greatly increased - now in excess of 1500km and that's even with a lot of city driving. New one drives beautifully but the old one isn't too bad either. Interior trim is a higher standard. Tow bar (just fitted one) is a harder to fit but the end result is good. Lights are better. GXL now has air bags and ABS standard and TD is same price as petrol and is cheaper than a TD in the previous model if air bags and ABS were added. Middle seats on old one folded back to make a bed with the back seats. New ones don't. I'm very happy with the new one as I was with the previous two!

Bill,

Have you measured the litres/100km?

Have you got an auto or manual?

Are they both equally as good off-road?

thanks mate.

Just filled my 120 TD manual (GX) for the second time and returned 11.2L / 100km city over 1200km (50% freeway, 50% burbs) which will give 1600kms range in the city haze. Cant wait to get it into the fresh air. As for the difference from old model I dont know, stepped up from a Kia Sportage and am now enjoying the whistle of the turbo (+ better fuel economy).

A collegue bought a run out old model, a few weeks later i got my KZJ120

I get slightly better economy, both go about the same in the bush.

Both 1kz-te 3.0 Td's

Both driven hard with 285/75/16's
