Camping at Innamincka

Have searched but still carnt decide(well I could spend a few days at each).Which is the best spot to camp at innamincka that has the most birdlife and animal life. Some say town common, others say Cullyamurra.Love waking up to Corellas and Galah's screaching from the tree's but also want to see heaps of wildlife.
Also, we have our desert parks pass, do we still have to pay to camp at Cullyamurra or does the pass cover it.
42 days and counting........

The Corella's at the Town Common were extremely vocal at last years National Gathering.

G'day Nick. Innaminka is on my list of places to return to. If accessible, the one place I would camp for a few days is Coongie Lakes. It's just one of the most magnificent places you'll ever visit.

The camping along the river at Innaminka is free. At least it was when I was there. There's a small fee for camping on the common I believe. The showers take gold coins (can't remember if $1 or $2) so take coins.

We were there in July 2004. It had an amazing effect on our kids and I have the photo to prove it. Can't remember which campsite we stayed at in Innaminka but it was just west about 1km.

The Barking Owls freaked my missus out during the night but I was there to protect her. That trip I became the man!

Nick,

Camped on the Town Common a few times and Cullyamarra Waterholes a few more times. When the Cooper is up I'd go the Town Common otherwise Cullyamarra but why not split the difference.

As said the Desert Parks pass covers Cullyamarra.

Been past Coongie a few times and was only able to get in there once. :(

Nick, I think I would camp at Cullyamurra, and when you go there, take the time to walk to the aboriginal petroglyphs near there.

Nick,
We camped at Coongie lakes this time last year on the river side near the dunny you will understand when you see it. Paid cant remember how much at the Post in innamincka. On arrival we thought great no one else here. Then we entered the camp area passed a huge black snake that reared at the car gave us the creeps. As sun went down had to retreat to the tent to escape the mossies. Dont know if it was because the lake was at full capacity. On our way out we went over a 4x4 track to the left that had camp sites on the eastern side. Thought that mite have been a better spot to camp.
Its worth a drive out there.
Enjoy your trip.

How long does it take to travel from Innaminka to Coongie Lakes?
How many camping spot options are there? Is there a better side or area option? What is the road out there like?
Thanks Tony

Hi
I used my Desert Parks pass to Camp in that Area.
Pass is required for
Town Common OK
Curdy a bit exposed shade trees and dusty when I was there toilets etc
Kudriemitchie Out Station, camp there, or just on past to signed camp sites, AOK
Camp site at end of road ,toilets OK
Take the track west I found a great spot at first camp site at lake no facilities. AAOK
100 ks from the town, 1 1/2 - 2 hrs
Go have a look you won't regret it

The shop in Innamincka is where we paid cause we didn't have a pass. We also purchased a history book on the area which was well worth it. Before there we purchased another book from Mungeranie Pub which complimented it they are only small so easy quick reading. I wish we went to the dig tree first. if the fella is still there he is full of info on the area. Anyhow it seemed to take ages to get to Coongie cause we had a big day and the sun was going down Russ is good with the time. Next time i would head out there in the morning then you have more time to explore and find a good spot. Tow camper or van. Couple of washouts but nothing serous only if you drive like a bullet, the road from Nappa to Innamincka was worse remembering it changes all the time so you have to take it on a day to day basis. While driving to Cullyamurra waterhole we thought it would be nice to camp not many there then either. at the end of the road we should have gone for a walk up the Cooper apparently. but you find these things out later of course. Will just have to go back i suppose.

Town common is good , no firewood however , you pay a smallish fee for a 3 day max stay [ very lax in enforcement] , other campsites at police hole /ski beach ect are ranger controlled ,, birdlife abundant and yellowbelly to fish for.

Always stayed at Ski Beach when in Innamincka and found it very good...just away from the Twn Common, but not too far out.

Nick,

either of Bourke’s Grave or Wills Grave sites are great spots. Firewood a bit scarce but if you pick up a bit on your way in that would cover it. The water hole at Bourke’s Grave area is much larger but with all the recent rains up north, I'd expect a positive impact on the Cooper. We stopped there in July 08 and the amount of wildlife (dingo's roo's , goannas) and birdlife was amazing.

Bullah Bullah up at the Dig Tree is very light on for timber and usually attracts a few campers.

Cheers Mick
