Hi, I hope anyone can give me a clue wht;s wrong with my startor or if you have similar problem on your GQ ?
3 months ago had a startor problem. Brought to a elecrician in Dandenong "Auto Electrical Bits & Batteries" along Frankston Rd. Said it has faulty solenoid. But then he brench
test, it seems engage ok. Anyway, it cost me $250 to replace solenoid and clean parts.
exactly 3 month after, some problem again. He claim water inside but i've never been offroad since it was fixed last time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boss "Dennis" said nothing he can do and i can't claim for warranty. Keep blaming my battery and connection.
Confirmed good battery (700Amp cranking) and connection. Flywheel ok.
Problem : When key turn to start, can hear the startor turning with high pitch noise. Exactly same problem twice include this time.
Could anyone give me advice ? Should I replace a brand new one(last resort) or bring this startor to another electrician ?

IAMGQ, is the high pitched noise you hear something like the starter gear spinning but not quite engaging on the ring gear (loud grinding noise)?
If so then the starter electrically could be fine and its all about the engagement that you need to look at. If the starter uses the solenoid to throw the pinion gear out, then water etc could be siezing the fork/throwout but most diesels use a twisted pinion shaft to throw the pinion out when the spinning action starts. This also can rust or tighten up causing the pinion to again not throwout!
But the pinion gear could be burred on the edges of the teeth and when it throws out it strikes the edge of the rind gear and spins agains that with out engaging, hence the high pitched noise!
Hope that helps but without more info thats the best I can do!
Matt.

Thanks for your response Matt. Yes. the noise is loud grinding noise. When it was brench tested, the pinion gear engage freely. Last time when it had problem, the electrician showed me it can engage freely on brench but he changed solenoid anyway.
This time, he showed me again with the pinion engage freely.
He keep saying the problem is from my battery but i can 110% sure my battery is working fine. I had loaded tested it and
check every cell working perfect.
I had offroaded few times with no deep water crossing since 3 mths ago. Would the virbration of offroading damage/affect the engagment mechanism of this starter ? ....
Do you think the job done by this electrician trustable ?

IAMGQ,
My starter hadn't got to the point of not engaging but the high pitched noise you hear I suspect is the starter whizzing around and not getting kicked in first. If you feel competent enough take the starter out and give everything a good clean, mines a 92, it was full of clutch dust, mud even a couple of small stones. The person who last did the job may have sprayed WD 40 or some such lubricant on the spindle which is a short term fix to free things up, over time the clutch dust will dry what ever you put on the spindle and eventually things will tighten up again, lubricant attracts dust so the effect may be quicker. I suggest taking the starter out and giving it a good clean, assemble dry and go from there, you may find a tight bearing or something like that. From what I remember one bolt is a pain in the butt, you might want to do an oil change while you're messing around with the starter motor, change the oil filters, the jobs a lot easier. Hope this is some help. Keep the shiny side up
