G'day guys,

I've recently purchased a 92 4runner that's had a 3.8L VR V6 conversion done. The 4runner was originally a 3L V6 and I was wondering how I can tell what type of gear box is in it. I'm lead to believe there's two boxes for this model. The G spec and the R spec? I'm also led to believe that one is much stronger than the other?

Can anyone tell me if this is true and how i'd go about identifying which box i actually have installed in the vehicle apart from the obvious stampings on the vehicles compliance / I.D plates?

Any help would be most appreciated! :)

Thanks guys

they usually leave the 4L60E attached to the V6 in these conversion as it makes wiring alot easier providing it is auto but if its manual it could be the commo 5 speed

I doubt its the Borg Warner 5 speed, there isnt a conversion kit that I know of to fit them. Only for the T700 (early V6) and 4L60 to Hilux transfer, and V6 to Hilux manual.

AFAIK

umm- wont that only have the original equipment fitted by Toyota?

Its had a Holden V6 fitted to it, and he wants to know how to identify the gearbox thats in it not what Toyota installed. Could be anything, and chances are that in the last 17 years it would have been replaced even without the engine swap.

re read he's post, he doesn't say the box was changed does it?

VIN number should tell him what model gearbox he has. if it was changed then he better ask another question.

Cheers

perhaps you should re-read it-he says "besides the obvious stampings on the plate" which will be whats listed against the VIN.

It seems hes not sure what has been changed. Perhaps I am wrong and he doesnt believe whats on the ID plate.

If the 4runner (being 92) was a v6 or diesel, it will have had the r150 5 speed in it from the factory. If it was 4 cylinder, it will have the r box
