GU Power Loss Problem

Hey all,

Now before everyone jumps down my throat, I have looked at the forums but thought I would put it out to everyone just in case I missed something.

The GU is doing what most have at some point or another. It is loosing power when I accelerate. It only started to do it yesterday on our return from wedge island.

I went down to Nissan today (after loosing power most of the way) and brought a brand new MAF for $250. Fitted it in the car park and drove it home with no problems at all (about 15kms) and actually found that it really did run better.

The wife took the car out tonight and said that it drove fine on her way out but when she went to come home (about 6hrs Later) it was back to square one.

I have had another look under the bonnet and found one of the clips for the air filter was off. Reconnected it with high hopes but just took it for another drive and what do ya know. Same thing is happening.

I have also given the accelerator solenoid a little tap and sprayed the contacters but no change noted. There seems to be lots of stuff about over boost and alike but I just don't seem to find things that match my problem as most of these seem to be talking about highway driving and not from take-off and the lower gears.

The only other thing that I thought I might mention is that Natrad serviced the radiator the other day, not that it probably has anything to do with the problem but thought it would be worth adding.

Helpful comments would be appreciated, sorry for the big spill.

I'm at a bit of a loss as usually the MAF is a big contributer to this type of situation. Fuel? How new is the filter, perhaps a dirty load of diesel. Have you tried a search and/or post on the NISSAN PATROL FORUM. Pretty knowledgeable bunch there. What did Nissan say?

As Mick o has said - i had this same prob with my 4.2 - ended up the little filter that is INSIDE the fuel pump was partially blocked and starving the fuel pump at revs

have you checked that ? just follow fuel lines into the fuel pump ( steel line) it has a 17 MM Bango style nut - filter is under the nut - its in pretty deep so you may need to use something like a cotton tip to get it out ( make sure you dont loose the spring that holds the filter down

hope this helps

Yeah, I remember a few people mentioning that they had oil contamination of the MAF from oil blowback. I can't quite recall but I think it may have have something to do with them removing/blocking the EGR hoses on the Patrol???? Food for thought.

Si

When was the fuel filter last changed? It may have a blockage.

Only replace with genuine Nissan Filter.

If you can, I would go back and get your old MAF sensor - keep it as a spare. These can be cleaned (with some success but not always) using CRC MAF Cleanser.

Hi Si
CRC MAF Cleanser is that like degreaser? How do you apply it? Do you spray, and wipe dry or spray and leave it? Can you use this to clean other the intercooler and other intake areas that have oil on them?
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob

CRC MAF Cleaner is like an electical circuit board spray. Only use it for the MAF. Spray cans of degreaser from SC are $2.08 each and a couple of cans is all that is needed for the intake manifold (if you remove it), intercooler and hoses. Make sure you do them off the vehicle, wash thoroughly with water and dry in the sun.

Mass Airflow Meter

It tells the computer how much air is coming into the engine, and the computer tells the fuel pump to feed fuel to suit the MAF, throttle setting and a few other sensors around the place.

Mass Airflow Meter - Not exactly

MAF - Mass Air Flow SENSOR (it is not a meter)

Just a thought, check all conections to all sensors. When they fitted the radiator they may not have connected all sensors back up. or not properly.
Good luck Pete

I had a problem with mine some time ago, no power when driving uphills or trying to overtake. it was a split in a vacuum tube that went to the turbo, it drove fine 90% of the time just struggled under load.

Thanks for your comments, it is all appreciated. The problem is still there but only intermittently. After reading some of the comments made, the only other thing that I did on Saturday that was out of the normal was fill up with Gull bio diesel due to our location.

I generally avoid using bio fuels and I'm not saying that this is the cause but I will be interested to see if the problem is still present after I fill up next time.

Again, appreciate the helpful comments.

I can almost relate to your problem as I was beginning to think mine was losing power also but then I realised that it really is just an underpowered and underbraked lump of a vehicle.
