Service time, so i head down to local Auto Pro, seeking some Penrite oils, as there the only stockists in town. Recommendations are 5w/30 Engine oil, but dont stock it, only 15w/50 or 20w/60 for diesels. Also need some 75w/90 for the gearbox and transfer case, dont stock it either. Only 80w/90. Im not just talking about Penrite im talking every brand, nothing i am after.

What do i do, should i just use the 15w/50 as i was going to use 15w/40 anyway for the Kimberley climate. But i what about the gearbox/transfer would it be alright to use a slightly heavier oil. I would really prefer the 75w/90 in there.

Vehicle is a 04 Turbo Diesel Manual Prado by the way. For some reason i am very fussy with my oils, im sh*it scared about using the wrong types ands doing damage. They just seem to think i can chuck in any oil and as long as it starts i'll be fine. Really worrying

Might be wortrh while asking if they will order in a box of 5lt in for you, or order a 20lt drum or even 200lt and share with mates. Should also save some money. I buy Castrol 10/30 in 20lt drums, but am going to switch to Penrite also.
Cheers Pete

I have a 78 series Troopy I recently changed the transfercase and gearbox ois with penrite. Changeing gears after was fine but I could not change from 2wd to 4wd on the fly. It just crrruncched. IF I stopped it was OK> so I went to Toyota asked for the recommended oil (payed $2.50 less)and replaced the T/case, after that all was OK worked a charm. So I suggest you just by the Toyota product if you're unsure.

Cheers

True, i have never known any 78,79 or 75 series to be able to change on the fly. Always have to drop down to about 8k's or so, and when changing out half the time having to reverse a little before it pops out. Yours must be a freak

the 2000 model 78 series will change from 2wd to 4wd high range on the fly up to approx 60 km per hour. If yours doesn't have it checked.

Your engine is a 1KZ-TE. I'd be surprised if Toyota had changed their recommendation to 5W30. My recollection is that that was only for cold climates. 15W40 or 10W40 will be fine. I wouldn't use a /50 or /60 oil in any diesel - thats too thick when hot.

Landcruiser gearboxes including the one in your Prado are fussy on gear oils. Most owners are happiest with Castrol VMX-M which is a 75/85 oil. Don't use the multitrax that Castrol recommend - It was hopeless in the Prado I owned.

Transfer is fine with VMX-M or most 75/90 oils. Valvoline Duragear 75/90 is the one I've used most.

I have to agree with the guys in the shop - An indirect injection diesel like yours tolerates almost any oil you put in.

Im lost mate, so definitely do not use the 15w/50. I currently run the 20w/60 in my 1HZ, with no problems. I really wanna stay with Penrite but dont wanna use anything under 15w. Might just have to go for the genuine Tojo stuff, but they get cranky here if they arent the ones servicing it. There already cranky that i havent let them do the 80,000km services, im only getting them to do the 80,000km checks.

I have just purchased the Castrol Manual Syntrax 75w/90 Full synthetic. Is this the multi trax yourtalking about, hope not. Cost $22 a litre.I m off the grog for a week just to pay for it.

Kroozer,
Just keep it simple.
Your owners manual will suggest you use a 15W40 - API grade CF or above for your engine. Why do anything different?
That Syntrax might be worth leaving in the box for the rest of the life of the vehicle! I've seen it on the shelves at the shop - I'm amazed they don't lock it up :-))
Multitrax is the cheap stuff that doesn't work well in Prado boxes.
For the diffs you can also simplify things by using LS90 in both front and rear.
