Not sure what you consider close but if you head east about an hour, the Boomanoomah
State Forest about 25 km east of Cobram is magnificent (it's on the Cockroach side of the river).

So which side of the river would the "cockroach side" be?
I would have crossed the river about 20000 times here at Cobram/Barooga but never actually seen any.

We recently stayed at Christies Beach which is free and a pretty good spot. Only a short drive into
Echuca. This was our first visit to the murray on route
home from the High Country.
Echuca was excellent. Really interesting/worthwhile doing the little trip upriver and wander around the old town. Some great little shops/cafes/pubs nearby too. Spoilt for choice in that regard. I'd like to try Jimbo's Boomarooma?? Don't know anything about it but he's mentioned it a couple of times and sounds nice. (the place, that is - not him ;-))))))))))))))))
