Time to have your fuel injection system overhauled, both pump and injectors need full treatment, do it now before you damage your motor, I had similar problem in an 80 series on a trip and blew the number 6 pot because my injectors were stuffed and giving poor fuel mix, it is worth it and cheaper than a rebuild!!!!!!

Have you gat a turbo on it?
What colur is the smoke?
Take it to have the pump and pressures and injectors checked and also
check cam lobes and put some nulon in in case a valve is sticking slightly. It could even be too little clearance. there are a thousand and one possibilities but one thing for sure is that you don't F**k with a diesel. get it to someone and sorted before you have a major repair bill.

thanks to you guys that offered solutions for my problem- i have just had the problem sorted it turned out to be a small filter blocked where the fuel enters the injection pump - one for the memory bank - once again thanks guys
