Thinking of selling the GU Patrol & getting a Troopy. Lottsa reasons why, but they are not the subject of this thread.
So, I have been perusing the Govt. vehicle auctions. Many variables exist between the "same" vehicles , but the one thing which does have me stumped is:
What is the difference between a
HZJ78R
and a
VDJ 78R

TheHZJ78R is the 1HZ 4.2 NA powered version
The VDJ78R is the single Turbo 4.5l version

HZJ78R = older engine none turbo-ed
VDJ78R = new V8 turbo-ed aftercooled
mine is a HDJ78R newer 6 cylinder turbo-ed engine.

So what distinguishes a Naturally Aspirated 6 cyl from a turbo-ed 6 cyl?
Is it the HDJ prefix?
can I assume(H) DJ = turbo?
and (H) ZJ = nat. asp?
If I bought a 2nd hand Troopy, what is the difference in
seat of the pants driving between HZJ & HDJ?

The HDJ or VDJ will sit you in the
seat when compared to the 1HZJ Slug ;)

Hi Richard,
I have a 2001 HZJ78R Troopy. Naturally aspirated Diesel 4.2litre engine. 5 speed manual gearbox.
We pull a 3 ton cravan with it and have for the past 6 years or so. ""Touch wood"" we haven't had any dramas at all and have done quite a few 000's K''s as we are on the
grey nomad
trails!
Yes the turbos have a lot more grunt and get you there quicker. BUT, what's the hurry? If you have the van on behind you can pull up where-ever; when-ever. Have never been able to work out why everyone is in such a hurry! There, hopefully, is another day tomorrow which hasn;t even started yet!
We are on permanent holiday and really enjoying it!
Troopys seem to go for ever as long as you keep the
services up when they are due! Not unusual to come across one with 400/500,000 kms on them!

With the Toyota diesels:-
HJ - 2h engine 4.0 litre non turbo
HZJ - 1HZ 4.2 litre non turbo
HDJ - 4.2 litre turbo diesel 24 valve ( goes like clappers)
VDJ - 4.5 litre turbo V8 diesel

Hi Rick,
I also have a HZJ78R Troopy 2002 vintage. Manual, 5 speed, naturally aspirated (non-turbo) and using those gears wisely will pull me anywhere. Of course the turbo's will go faster on the highway but I never seem to have difficulty reaching the speed limit. Does slow down a bit on the hills though.
I'm sure I'll get argument with this but it seems to me that the simpler it is then the more reliable it is. Turbo's do have their problems at times and out-bush the less there is to go wrong the better in my book.

Next Q:
Is it worth paying approximately $8 to $10,000 more for a 2nd hand V8 over a turbo-ed 6 cylinder?
I realise age, condition & mileage affect price also; but it's not hard to find vehicles of similar age/km with a $ 10 K difference. Is this just due to the V8 alone?

Sounds like you now know the designations.
Knowing what you do and where you go, I'd suggest you go for the HDJ78.
The HZJ78 is a bit of a slug and uses more fuel - about 13.6 l/100k vs 11.9 l/100k according to the official figures. The VDJ78 has had its teething problems with oil consumption and fancy injectors.
The HDJ78 uses the 1HD-FTE 24valve factory TD motor which has been around for a long time, and is a reliable piece of gear. If you ever want more power, you can add a chip (eg Dtronic) and 3" exhaust, or if you're satisfied with the torque, you do nothing!
The HDJ78 came in 3 versions according to seating. Released in late 2001 and finished at the end of 2006. The 3 seater and 11 seater vehicles were base models with vinyl, 3 seats across the front, windup windows, no central locking, cassette player etc etc All troopies came with split rims, but if you want tubeless rims, any of the rigid axle 105series will fit, but you'll need to buy flares.
The 5-seater HDJ78 was called the RV - came with carpet, small centre console, twin bucket cloth seats, bits of chrome, CD, electric windows, remote central locking. Its probably the most popular model and commands a few more $$.
The SA Govt Auctions is a reasonable place to buy. But check the service books and try to trace the past history. Most are sold with 100,000k on the clock and sell for $30k to $43k. The cheap ones have usually seen heavy use up north, the police ones look to me to be better serviced. A lot of the accessories were taken off them before sale. If you buy oine, you'll want to fully service it before going too far off the beaten track.

The HZJ78 has a smaller gearbox than the HDJ and VDJ models, and they wear out sooner. HZJ78 was only available as a 6 seater RV from 1999 to 2001.
The HDJ and VDJ vehicles are identical from the cab back.
But there's a wider front track on the VDJ (actually 4" wider than the rear on the VDJ, which some perceive as a problem)
Wider front panels and intercooler on the VDJ.
Is the V8 worth $8k more?? My opinion is no. I'd normally have changed my vehicle by now, but there are no significant improvements with the VDJ over the HDJ apart from the introduction of airbags a few months ago.

We have been travelling with our 93 Troopy since 2007 and have done over 75,000km with it. Wouldn't have any other vehicle. Our only comment would be check for rust, especially in the roof and around the gutter, and windows.
