hi all. We are leaving the safety of our 4wd and boating to Pancake creek in CQ. I usually cook in the camp oven but we are going to brave not taking the camp oven in the tinny. now I realise it is a stove and I can cook anything for dinner but wondering if anyone has any nifty recipes I can try. i LOVE camp cooking and experimenting with camp cooking. baking? deserts? mains?

Hi Carlin,
You can cook a variety of steamed puddings in a jam tin immersed in a saucepan of water. Add custard cooked in another saucepan. Just don't serve it up every night!

cheers

Try doing your normal camp oven cooking in triple or quad wrapped alfoil - shiny side out in the coals.

Works for us on kayak trips -

Have fun at Pancake - the walk out to both lighthouses (Bustard and North Point) is worth it.
I used to paint up the graves at Bustard back when no-one loved the place, there's a whole bloody society of bustard lovers now though.

P.S. good little bit of reef just to the north of the creekmouth.

I didnt think we were allowed coals? how do I walk to the lighthouse? how long is the walk? we have 2 kids 4 and 5 but they are pretty good walkers. Is there a track or bush beat? graves? mmm might need to do some quick research! Is that reef just off the big beach area? If there are people camped there we plan to go to the little beach east of there?

You'll see the remains of the old corduroy lighthouse access track coming down to the creek - just follow it up the hill - takes 30 odd minutes.
There is another track branching off to the north to North Point if you wish to go there.
Carry drinking water as there's none available at the top.
Beaches? are you camping up the creek?
The reef is outside the creek mouth - basically an extension of the northern bank and up a bit - plenty of fishing all around the headland too.

Oooh ohhh, get a Coleman Camp Oven. They are GREAT. Go on the gas stove and work as a full oven, for bread, cakes, roasts, anything that goes in a normal oven.

My best recipe, which I make about twice a week sadly.... cos its so YUMMY...

You get a black and gold cake mix packet, I use vanilla, the wee one uses chocolate... mix into it 3/4 cup of melted butter and put it in a slice tin.

Bake for 15 mins.

Pull out and top it with 400g tin of pie apple and 200 grams of sour cream mixed up. (approx. is fine).

Sprinkle cinnamon on it, back in the oven for 15mins.

I like it cold cos the base is all crunchy, rest of the family like it hot.
SOOO good.
