Free Camp sites at Jindabyne for X-mas

If you go past the Thredbo turn off out of Jindabyne and go approx 5kms, on the right, there is a nice spot on the Lake to camp.

Hill End and Sofala way are close to the south. Lots of nice driving and campsites by rivers. Can do prospecting and fishing.

Further south is Abercrombie NP, Jenolan SF, Oberon and Kanagra Boyd NP with various campsites and lots of tracks. Good bush walks too.

More northerly are Barrington Tops which are cooler (temp wise!) and good for walking and the views.

Choices are large and all have great merits - depends on your final destination direction really.

Let us know and can advise more, or have a hoy at the treks on here. I'm pretty sure they'll appear on my words above actually. Magic!

You did not say if your were planning to stay within the Kosciuczko national park area. If you are, this is very popular particually over the period you mentioned. There are quite limited "vehicle based" camping locations in the park. There is also a 'park usage" of $16 per vehicle/day. You can also get an annual pass for $190. (vehicle based camping is not allowed outside marked areas)

As you are coming from Mudgee on the north western side of the mountains, there are many camping locations that are free and just outside the park.

Bowering Dam is a good example as it is free, has 4WD tracks through the forests, heaps of camping spaces along the water edge, fishing and bush walking. It also has great toilet facilities that are maintained by the park rangers. It is a short drive to Tumut for supplies as well.

Try the visitors center Jindabyne on 026450 5600 they are very helpful.

There are two good spots between Jindabyne and Thredbo - one is Thredbo Diggings, not sure the name of the other - but both on the river.

Hi Rusty the areas around Tom Groggin and Geehi are great areas to camp not too sure how busy they are over Xmas. At Geehi if it is crowded at the firs area you can cross the river and head west and there are another two large areas heading towards Geehi walls trail. Both these areas are close to access to the Vic high country which is a great day trip up to Davies High plain and the loop back around past Mt Pinnbar.

We stayed at Tom Groggin (past Thredbo) two Christmas' back. It's a large camping area right on the Murray R. Up to Christmas Day there was only us and two or three others, however from Boxing Day the crowds moved in. We left the day after Boxing Day and there were people lining up to take our spot as we were packing up.

The other sites around this area (Geehi etc) are also great camping sites, but all were full to the brim straight after Christmas. If you can setup camp for your group before the masses arrive you should be able to find a good site.

I'd recommend you choose a site next to a river as it can get hot this time of year (and an afternoon dip is mighty fine) and be ready for the march flies to be out in force (don't forget the aeroguard).

As Clint mentioned earlier, campsites this side of Thredbo give you easy access to 4WDing in Vic High Country and also the more touristy Thredbo, Jindabyne, Tumut, etc.

I'd recommend Yarrangobilly camp ground.
It is next to the highway with the Yarrangobilly river, quality long drop, rubbish bin. No facilities so make sure you have all you need
It is a great base for the Northern KP area.
Go to the KNP site and look at the camping page and scrol to Yarrangobilly Village campground.
